Roll on september the 10th is all i can say, ive wanted to be a class one driver since i was about 3 years old, i think ive definatly got the passion about been a driver. when i left school at 16 i was an apprentice fitter, i gained alot of manouvering expierience in a very tight yard (sun rain and snow). but that counts for nothing when your out on the road. i think this is a good idea for those that actually want to be drivers. im currently un-employed at the moment and i see some absolute baffoons behind the wheels of some 7.5 tonners and it ■■■■■■ me of because i could do that job! instead that moron thats not bothered about being a “truck driver” does it and im stuck with £50 a week.

It did for me - I was used to the size etc before I ventured out.

im currently un-employed
To get the licence as an INVESTMENT FOR THE FUTURE is a good idea but if you are thinking about getting it for a job in this current climate, especially without any experience - think again
I think they should be able to PASS but then they should be limited in proffesional driving.
In one of the countries I know (I don’t want to mention it’s name, as some people seems to have some issues with me giving this example) the C or C+E driver was limited to certain gross mass vehicle for a first three years.
I think this is the way it should be - gain some experience on smaller vehicles then move to bigger ones.
I did a fair mileage on sprinter-sized vehicles before I moved to class 2 and it was really good way IMHO.
it sems to be there will be two types of 18 year olds wanting to take there lgv cat C+E test
and it will be either those comong from a haulage background i.e there parents have a haulage firm or are divers themselves
or those coming from a farming background
both types probably already familar with manoverin large vehicles around
i wouldnt imagine for one moment that u would get any old 18 yr old coming of the streets and going for there cat c+e test even those that some how manage to get the funding themselves or from the dole or whatever
I can’t agree. There will be a third type of “I have to show them how big ■■■■■ I have, so I will be driving a REALLY BIG thing, not a saxo!”
[/quote]
but i think oyrs the boyracer / chav element would get bored long before they get throug with the training
lets think of this the is a problem with this country at the mo (rest of the world as well)
so lets said a young man or lady went for there class one at 18 years old and passed there have just spent 2k on doing it, and along come an employer looking for a driver to drive is truck some employers would think of a few things that would be against him/her for one age and the there’s experience and of course insurance
so there have hit a brick wall three times
But wait there are some employers that are at the moment looking to save money so the need a new driver there pay at the mo £7.50 per hour for a class one but now there know there are 18 year old out there who now can drive class one’s on 4.77 per hour a big difference to an employer,
you mite say what about the insurance its going to cost them more far do but look at this
a 18 year old on 4.77 per hour for 40 hours is £190.80
a 25 year old on 7.50 per hour for 40 hours is £300.00
that’s a difference of £5678.40 per year some how i don’t think the excess will be that much
and i thing the will have to move the restriction about age for insurance cos if there don’t what would the point of it
before anyone say there will not work for that well if the want to pay 2k to do the test in the first place wouldn’t that mean that there want do drive a truck and if the are offered a job at that rate of pay there may take it, its there choice

Sounds like a really bad idea to me. Many 18 year olds shouldnt be behind the wheel of a saxo, yet alone an artic.
but we’re more than happy to pack an eighteen year old off into various warzones around the globe… i for one would be more than happy to employ someone of this age if they’ve gone to all the expense/hassle to gain themselves a class 1…(assuming the insurance companies gave us a financial incentive),ok granted there are without a doubt some proper ■■■■■■■■■ out there like your corsa/saxo types, but i’m sure there’s also young guy’s out there that just need the oppurtunity/chance to prove themselves…lighten up

This is to young, ,£1000 ins for 19 year old in a Lupo 1.1.Years ago i went for job at Rankins Tankers, passed test and interview but told to young at 22 …you had to be 26 for insurance ,dont know if it is the same now
there are many 65 year old pillocks on the road,
there are many 18 year old pillocks on the road.
not every 18 year old is a boy racer,
not every 65 year old is senile.
i did think about the look on some kids faces after his first week of driving.
drivers mates down the pub. “What’s it like being a trucker”?

thats got me thinking actually. i have seen a truck with blue underbody neons and you always see trucks with LEDs, light bars, spots etc. are these the chavs of the trucking industry?
