Artic £160 for 12 months tax?

One time I saw a normal UK tax disc on an NI truck and it was only £160 (or there abouts). It certainly looked like it was being used commercially. Was a 2003 white Volvo FH. That can’t be right, surely?

from what i understand, if you get a 3 axle unit and a 3 axle trailer, have them downplated to 24 tonnes (or there abouts) with RPC can be the same as car tax which would be approx £165

This thing looked heavy. The tyres did look a bit squished. I was thinking about the downplating option but certainly didn’t look circa 24t :stuck_out_tongue: Was a 6x2 and a tri ax trailer

Long before the days of VOSA & their foreign equivalents, a friend of mine used to run to Italy. Almost always had a “private” tax disc in the window - usually stuck right at the top of the screen where it was difficult to read. … and ofcourse white diesel was only for UK running.

Most companies doing continental ran their trucks on private tax, even the legal ones used to ship back into the port, drop the trailer, and go home solo, while the legal shunters would set them up for next week

so what’s the penalty of caught by vosa running on private tax rather than paying the full amount?

You can use private tax, vehicles such as race transporters and horse boxes run at £165

Muckles or Geebee45 is your man or men for racing and horsing

When I was running my own truck because of the type of work were I was rarely grossing more than 25 tonnes and never got near 30 tonnes I had my vehicle plated at 31 tonnes. My 4x2 unit pulling a tri axle trailer was tax Band A and it was £165 a year.

We have all 44 tonne units.
Several are down plated plated to 28 tonnes and are taxed legally at £165.
The remainder are fully rated for running with tri axle trailers and pay full RFL.
This is because running out bound with parcels we do not exceed 28 tonnes, but if as on some occasions we have to backload with wine, bagged seed, printed paper or something heavy,we have to go out with a fully taxed unit and tri axle trailer to be legal for the back load. Then of course the double deckers have dedicated units with dual height fifth wheels and always run heavy.

hiya…my DAF,s plated at 44ton and is £165 tax. I can go and collect a load if i buy it before traveling and its for my use.

a load of bricks for my sons house i,am going to build for him when he gets married. we did,nt all carry loads
of beans or wine for safeways there are a few materials that are everyday needs. oh i forgot to mention a load of
straw for the horses.only last week i collected a load of 2x2 paving flags. see what i,am saying.do,nt you carry

Hiya…steve-o. steve you,ll have to think quicker than that to catch a old hand trucker out. over weight you can get over 30tons
easly on a tipper trailer nowadays and the 26 pallets■■? they may have only been 50 kgs on a pallet i did,nt say they had a ton on them
plus the pallet weight. less than 1/2 a mile from where i live is a very busy VOSA weighbridge and i drive past and see the place full
many times so i have to be on the ball. running a little over weight one day i was driving past st asph and got pulled i had a very heavy outfit and was pulled over, the ministry man looked at me so i handed over the techo. he replied i don,t want that its a weigh check,
so whys he pulled me i said■■? i banged on the trailer side and they give out a hollow sound (dong…dong) he said god knows sod off .I smiled and wished him a nice day. As i set of with 22 tons on scrap iron granuells on the trailer floor they did,nt touch the sides.
was i doing wrong maybe… did he know his job■■? maybe he,s my golden angel. It was over thirty years ago.but i can,t remember who i was drivig for or what lorry it was.
