Arthur Aaron VC 12/13 August 1943

Flight Sergeant Arthur Aaron is commemorated by a statue in Leeds. Aaron had insisted that members of his crew should be able to carry out the duties of others in an emergency. After recovering control of the severely damaged aircraft at only around 3000ft, SGTs Larden & Mitchem attempted to return to England, however they were forced to turn away several times from promising valleys, upon finding that the aircraft would not climb high enough to clear the Alps.
