one for ex squaddie hgv drivers, passed three on the A419 today and all three were doing about 45mph,they were all the old Leyland ones,i listened as I went by and to my mind it sounded like that’s all they could muster, did not sound like they had anything else to give, were they [all army vehicles]all underpowered cos that’s what it sounded like, sounded like the engines were screaming to give the drivers the 45mph,curious to know, maybe ex REME would know
Oh lord, Carryfast will be along shortly to turn this into a 25 page thread and post endless YouTube videos to prove his point that no one watches
If they were Leyland Roadtrains they used to suffer from screaming diffs, you could hear them coming a mile off.
Maybe that is what you heard.
Were they 6 wheelers? I’m ex reme and they were the first class 2 wagons I drove at my workshops as a reccy mech. Not much ‘speed’ in them but the torque was awesome. Suspension was also solid… go over a pothole and you would know about it. Soon after, we got new fodens which were ok but didn’t seem to have the character and nuances of the old leylands.
I can remember being stopped at Swindon about 20 years ago at the Happy Eater ( or what ever it was called ) at the top of Blunsdon Hill by VOSA to be told that they had clocked a Army 4 Tonner Leyland T45 newish at the time doing about 80 on the duel carriageway.
Sounds similar to a DROPS truck, had the pleasure of going from Cambridge to Inverness, and back again, in a left ■■■■■■ automatic which went no faster than 42mph, that was a fun few days…
Don’t the Army limit convoy speed to 40mph anyway

yes roadtrains,i thought they were retired some years ago
The old Bedford MJ could only muster 50 mph flat out ,and that was with a turbo
…
Unless you was friendly with the REME who might show you how to improve performance a touch
do army trucks not have a very low ratio diff to give them better off road performance hence enginge at full revs at 45 ?
alsso army tyres, are they speed rated to 40?
Most military vehicles are a compromise between off and on road use
No point in being able to drive across a field if it takes a week to get there
