ARMY "be the best"

Maybe you have but most have not. What you say is not true. They do strap loads. Seems you mate is giving you duff info. You are not the only one that knows people that work there.
What year were you in the Army ? 50’s, 60’s. :unamused: There have been many changes since then.

No they don’t strap loads other than one day of training in load securing. I live 12 miles from the largest Defence Driving School in the entire UK. I did my driver training there. When they get in their lorries to do their day’s training with a loaded truck and when doing convoy training the concrete filled palletised boxes on the back of them are already in place and strapped down. When you follow them around the straps holding them on are old, the metal banding round the boxes is rusty, the ratchets have long since passed the point they can be undone and I suspect that if they were subject to the same rules as we were VOSA would have a field day inspecting them.

I was in the Army in the early 90s. I did additional driver training in the 2000s. The way they’re taught has not changed. They’re still training to the same training schedule on exactly the same training routes, still parking up at the same snack vans around the county and cafe on Sutton Fields in Hull.

I am fairly sure you are not correct but I will check soonest and apologise if wrong.

Eg Did you know they don’t do drops courses any longer?
They don’t use Daf 4 tonnes anymore. Dreaded Man autos.
And they do very few LGV tests now.

I am afraid you are incorrect Conor. I have now checked and I can confirm the ratchet straps are fitted and removed everyday. They are initially taught how to use a ratchet strap and taking off and putting on is their practice.
That is 100% correct as of today so you and your mate are out of touch.

I doubt many will disagree with me on this, I learnt to drive hgv in the army, RCT 1979. We were trained in navigation actually reading a map, driving in all terain with combat driving and across fields etc, trained to maintain the lorry and drive in convoys. In comparison with todays modern 5 day wonders who have cpc courses and using sat navigation or get lost at every junction, is there any wonder that Ex army drivers are actually better equiped to do the job. What’s the general opinion on this, could you disagree?

Squaddies are bad biffs

just read through all this thread and the conclusion I have come to is ffs live and let live. the good, the bad, and the ugly, good and bad in all… :unamused: :exclamation:

Since when do hgv drivers drive through fields and study maps in much detail
Most army folks joined because they either could not cope with the outside world or needed direction in life
Ie someone to tell them how to dress themselves in the morning or how to tie there shoes
With all due respect to anyone who went to war there is always a majority who need to be lead by the nose we even have it here

This probably won’t help, but every person (driver or not) that I’ve come across in life with anger management issues have forces connections. No doubt there are many that I’ve not come across with such issues have never been near the forces and also many that have been in the forces that don’t have those issues. Whether they already had these issues and were drawn to the forces that did nothing to help them or whether their problems occurred due to being in the forces, I don’t know, maybe someone should do a study about it.

Nothing like a barracks queen to give it Billy big balls.

Did all that civvy driving in a year? Or did your basic on barracks, and took the early ticket out?

Can I have your autograph, you sound like the best… :unamused:

Cgscott if I was you I wouldn’t be bragging about the fact that either I couldn’t hold a job down or that I couldn’t get on with civvie street employment. The way your post reads makes it look like you don’t know what to do now you’re not being led by the hand. Don’t know how long you were a squaddie but at 38 you’ve had more jobs by the look of it than me in 47 years driving OR your agency has a vast range of contracts to loose you in.

When I were a lad I was in the Army cadets. ‘Served’ 3 years [emoji23]
Does that make me a good driver or a bad driver?

I was in the Cubs if that counts

Oh dear. :unamused:

Army cadets was better. We got to ‘play’ with lee Enfield 303’s on the ranges and on mock battles with blanks and all!!! I bet they don’t let the little oiks these days loose with riffles and blanks to fire at will like we did! The only safety briefing we got was one of the officers pinning a piece of paper to a tree then shooting it at close range to show us how dangerous blanks are. They are very dangerous let me tell you [emoji54]

I was in Beavers, but that’s another story.

(Not referring to a certain member on here either btw I must stress  )

Not at all. Served 8 years.

I choose to jump from job to job to get experience in different work. Drove lorrys aged 24 to 34 on civvie street. Never out of work for more than a week.

Cheers.
