Don’t know , they only supplied me with a post code , that took me down to a r/O which I went round & back on my self then sat nav said take a slip road so I did , then it took me too the wrong entrance , so the guard type kid said park over there near some low loaders with tanks on and go to the guard room / office , she said I needed to go to the Mercian ( think that was the name ) place straight over the road , I did but apparently your not meant to drive straight upto barrier but park before & walk up , too late so couldn’t go back so had to park on doubles & go back to guard room / office , after a while of trying to sort out where it was I wanted to be ( and some army bloke coming in , going off about a lorry dumped by office on doubles ( I just looked at floor ) we got a bloke who knew the crack , got photo done , 2 red passes & bloke directed me from passenger seat of lorry , nice lad but was a bit abrupt as I asked him a few times which way to go & he said well not through the no entry sign that’s for sure , follow the one way signs & I’ll tell you where to stop
Got loaded ok , then travelled back to out gate , he dropped in passes & then followed sat nav back to a34 , wrote a list of what to do in diary for next time , something I learn years ago , always put details of drops in a diary

I used to deliver to RAF Waddington almost daily, the Vulcan Bomber was still operating in those days. I had a permanent contractor pass which generally expired on my birthday. I only had to go inside the guardroom if they were on alert, that could be a domestic between a RAF family/Redcaps or a Russian plane invading our airspace, but when you can sit at the side of the runway when 6 Vulcan bombers take off, it is pure music and ■■■ :stuck_out_tongue:

RAF Waddington is probably more secure now as it is an intelligence base, (iStar) and the drones that were used in Afghanistan were operated remotely from Lincolnshire

And they’ve moved the Vulcan ^^^^ from pride of place beside the A15. Dunno where it is now, presumably still on site I’m hoping. Incidentally that Vulcan was the one that bombed Stanley airport.

They’ve moved it elsewhere on site for restoration work. Hoping to have it back in place for the 40th Anniversary of the Black Buck raids.

Classics still don’t know where he’s been just blindly follow a sat nav

I always used to get waved through at Pirbright by the gate guard, then stopped and asked for ID on the way out!

This one is at Sunderland Aircraft Museum just behind Nissan on the A19

Tyneside

They’ve got one near here at Wellesbourne - They still run it up several times a year and also take it for a trot up the runway every now and then.

I read there are only 17 remaining Vulcan, all but 4 are still in the UK, none are fit to fly but some do offer Taxi Runs

Back in the 80`s I made a drop into USAF/RAF Bentwaters. So long ago I won1t be revealing any secrets.

Firstly shouted directions from a guard on an ungated entry.
Then to contractors portakabin. Delivery instructions and ID checked. My office had checked week previously that I had a passport and told me to ensure I carried it.
Accompanied by contractor to near next gate where he left me.
Stop. Doc check and stinger pulled off road by armed military. Lots of bodies holding weapons.
Up to gate, stop, out of vehicle, as stinger pulled back.
Passport check and phone call by guard in brick built shed with thick green glass. He read me my instructions.

“This is a restricted area. You will have an armed guard with you at all times. Obey his instructions at all times.
If told to halt: Stop. Do not move. If you do not the consequences will be serious”…I believed him.

Few minutes later past first gate into lock between two gates. As I drove in my own guard walked alongside with his weapon pointing vaguely at me.
Stopped, out of cab, guard stood beside me as vehicle and load very well searched.
Back in cab and drive slowly as my guard walked alongside.
.
At delivery point my guard was beside me all the time. Every contractor there had their own armed guard with weapon in hand.
One for the guy with the shovel. one for guy on the JCB etc.
Job done in 30 or 40 mins. A bit of a warning from guard as I just ducked quickly from one side of trailer to t`other…I slowed down! Back in cab as my guard walked beside me again.
Through the gates in two stages again. Wait until stinger pulled away. Gentle drive to get notes signed and away.

I have delivered a huge amount of land rovers and transit vans to military bases, British and american all over the country, usually just told where to go or asked to follow a guide never seen anyone with a gun.

I`m very sure you are right.
My point was there are different areas within bases. Depending on whether you are delivering to the canteen, or other areas depends on the level of security you will encounter.

Truly disturbing :open_mouth:

I went onto a USAF base with a FEL truck and the armed guards searched inside the truck and they wanted to see inside the body, luckily we had a hopper camera. One guard with a rifle wanted to climb the ladder on the side as he had always wanted to go on top of one, he had the gun and he got his wish.

Some bases you don’t get an ■■■■■■, ones in Oxfordshire come to mind, but you’ll always be asked for ID.

At one transport company I worked at they sent an eastern european to the Defence Academy who was refused entry!!!

When I was based at RAF Benson we never escorted anyone, just gave them directions at the gatehouse and let them crack on.

Our Polish driver forgot his DL when we sent him to Menwith Hill, he got turned away…we didn’t send him again

Attempted to attend a breakdown at AWRE Aldermaston in the 70’s, I was born in Libya and my apprentice in Poland…we didn’t get entry!

Pete.

Get to the canteen they do really good BBQ grilled 2" thick steaks - Dozy will have wet dreams about it

i deliver up to faslane company supplies my details to them before hand.u show show ur id show ur paperwork and get passes and wait for my ■■■■■■.but depends where u go on base if it high rick u do need a ■■■■■■ to it.and some do search u cab to as well they just pop quick look thats it.u may have to put ur phone in a locker if u go certain areas and may have to a video for a base pass which last 12 months.but its pretty easy
