Are your roads salted

Well said that man - top post.
(wasnt driving an Anglia or Viva in those days though, ime not that old)
First car was a Hillman Avenger

Can’t believe those three cars all mentioned in the same post…owned one of each, all green apart from the viva, which was brown
Almost got killed in the avenger on the keswick Bypass near that big bridge over the greta, by some clown driving down the wrong side of the road.

My very first car on passing my test in 1986 was a hand me down 1972 K reg Viva, what a steaming heap of brown smelly stuff that was!! :open_mouth:

HomoFaber:
I had a row with my landlords (company looking after the estate I live in) right after the first snowfall and another one with council highway dept after xmas - before NY. All pointless, everything was done in line with approved policies, everybody did a good job, everything is fine. In reality the state of pavements in P’boro forced people to walk on roads as it seem safer, most streets were unswept and ungritted and will remain such as they are not part of of the “winter precautionary scheme” or whatever they called it. Major roads were fine-ish - gritted once or twice at the beginning so stayed wet on days and icy at nights.
Their arguments included “we cannot be responsible for weather” and “if you want anything done, do it yourself”.
So I ended up gritting our car park and access road myself; people who would not dare to drive anywhere could at least walk to rubbish bins .
I drove from Kirkcaldy to Peterborough on Saturday - some snowing around Dunfermline, on the Edinburgh bypass, then sleet Gateshead to Darlington roughly, then rain around Doncaster - and “salt spreading” messages on  temp ~ +5… despite doing steady 70-80mpg I did not catch on any gritter…

My colleague informs me that Peterborough have had gritters out pretty much around the clock on the roads. But probably the same as most other places footpaths etc are not a priority, like residential areas.

Also I gather that Salt Union are giving the HA first dibs on Salt and that Peterborough are running low, happy travels !!

it’s clear up here now but in the mornings the roads are bad but what is salt going to do with the ice■■?, naff all . All we need is Sun or a good temp, that should clear it.

I don’t know what everyone is complaining at

You get a chance at playing “Ice road truckers” for a few days

Kyrbo:
It also looks like temperature is “much” below zero and that temperature could be too low for salt to work (about -4 C or -5 C).

You are right Kyrbo, i salted the path behind our house and it did not work, my thermometer in the back garden has not been above -5 today and last nights min was -13 and tonights gonna be colder seemingly :open_mouth:

Well then it’s definitely too cold for salt to work. About -8 C is quite the maximum on which salt works and it works only if road has enough traffic to dry it up after salt spreading. Spreading salt on that kind of temperatures is nevertheless bit of a gambling and as a result road may turn into more slippery ice sheet as road didn’t dry up in time

But I’d suggest you to enjoy the weather while it lasts and not to complain how your backyard isn’t salted  :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue:

Is it just me or is he going rather rapidly in the snow??

My road has been stopped being gritted. I live on a hill, which starts off gradual but kicks up at the end.
Woke up this morning hearing car tyres slipping around outside. My brother needed to go to uni and he tried to get up, but got stuck. There was a car near the top of the hill wheel spinning and cars lined up behind.
So it was get dressed, get the wheel barrow and the sand and start throwing it on the road. A woman in a Merc started to go up, to get stuck abit higher up where no sand had been thrown. Had to walk along next to that throwing sand under the wheel so she got up, then do the same to a few others.
Got the road going from my house up to a level where you could go up. Next it was getting a bus going, so throwing sand under the back wheels. He had been sat there for a good while with people just goign around him, but he wasnt going anywhere. Finally got him going.
Absolutely stupid. Why wasnt the council out gritting the road? Its been gritted every year since we can remember, and neighbours can so people come up the road(or try) thinking it would be gritted.
To really annoy me, while walking to college i saw a council truck with a big pile of grit on the back going around.
Guess how many thank you’s i got for getting the cars unstuck? None. :unamused:

Apart from the mountain roads being closed the Isle of Man D of T has done OK I reckon.
They didn’t grit/salt beach though
