My TM has asked me if I can drive plant in our gravel pit for a week or two (short staffed and busy) and they’ll get a temp to drive my lorry. It suits me fine as it seems I’ll be moved to plant permanently anyway, but apparently it’s easier to get a temp driver than a temp plant op. Despite it being a profession, are we ten a penny to recruit?
Id say so these days

No mate, its dead hard to get drivers. Even harder to get trampers who are away all week, and even harder again to get Euro trampers who can be away for weeks on end. I mean who wants to do that sort of work, its not like you see people asking everyday for this type of work?
On the other hand there is forums dedicated to gravel pit plant operatives who are always constantly asking for work. You never come across them yet?
Yes Mike I’m a moderator on pitnetuk

Not so much that as there are more agencies doing driving than there are doing specialist plant operators.
I worked in recruitment for quite a few years and unless things have changed, the only site workers I came across were doing stuff like tele-handlers; all the rest of the “industrial” side were either labourers, pickers or FLT drivers.
Should be good some class1 super trucker agency man on a tipper.

Aslong as it’s not Mr Tesco we had years ago: “I’ve done this, that and that”…but can’t follow the instruction “Stay on the road”.

It’s a profession in the sense that you get paid for doing it, but that’s about all. A profession is generally considered to be a position requiring knowledge of some area of learning or science.

I worked with Excavator and Gradall for a few Years before driving but have no License for it right now and no Company pays for it.

Depence the Pay
Sure its hard to get a European Driver for £350.-/Week but wouldn’t for £750.-/Week

Mortimers, S&K etc don’t seem to have any trouble finding them.

I’d say getting the driver for that money is easy but keeping a good one would be hard hence s&k always advertising.
Tried to get work locally on tippers and most companies have said it’s not like mulitdrop and quite complicated and they won’t take on drivers who haven’t ever even driven a tipper!
Not realy complicated just common sense but it can go wrong in a spectacular fashion when it does.
Like lots of truck driving jobs you got to start at the bottom with the moody outfits.
I didn’t realise common sense was a requirement for tipper drivers. Some must get theirs on grandfather rights
Yeah, I’ve spent a fair whack of time driving other things too, including driving vehicles where over half of their weight is more than 2 meters off the ground, which makes handling interesting But clearly not one to be trusted with a tipper…
driver’s in general yes.good driver’s no.
