Are they doing it for some misguided traffic flow idea, or

This must be the best thread i have read on this site in ages. It really gets you thinking and i for one can see both sides of the argument But dont want to say anymore as i think most seems to have been covered.

Anyway well done on a top thread.

Ps. lets have no personal attacks or owt…just discussion eh.

I agree Bones, el gordo should be congratulated for starting it. Now I don’t want to say I told you so but…

I have decided not to spoil a such a good thread like this one! :bulb:

Some very good points have been made, I will leave it at that!

So… Two trucks blocking both lanes, rolling along at 50mph (marked speed limit) traffic behind queuing to get past, trucks get to the cones and one slots in front of t’other. Cars behind now all up to cones and can Zzzzipper right in to their hearts content,. job well done. Thanks Driv’. :smiling_imp:

nope - cos they’re all bunched up behind large slow vehicles, instead of flowing at their natural pace (the 80th percentile isn’t it?) - and so the gaps behind only exist in rare pockets, not all along to merge in.
It kills the zipper dead.

So

I talk TWADDLE

and are Just PLAIN SILLY

Thanks! :unamused:

You’re welcome  I’m arrogant, use my vehicle as a weapon and drive discourteously   - hard to be farther from the truth. Not name calling either pete - just using one mans arguments against himself - its the heaviest of cudgels to attack back with  nothing personal (I mean that).

I can prove to be all of the above myself - just start a topic on football and see

2. The fact that the roads are so overcrowded now that it doesn’t matter what we do, if you shut down one third of available roadspace (i.e moterway lane) there are always going to delays.

That is the most sensible comment in this whole debate. It sums the situation up nicely, various things may increase or decrease the amount of the delay but sniper has hit the nail on the head there will be a delay.

I blame the lack of flying cars they promised in the 50’s.

Coward.

traffic works have moved a bit - still happening.

in fact, saw it happening with 3 seperat drivers trying it, and simply causing expanses of empty tarmac ahead of them.
if it worked, there’d be no need for the drivers behind to start their own traffic-jam party as it’d all be flowing seemlessly.

but, it aint.

traffic not helped today either, by a couple of accidents, indluding what appeared to be a truck having punted a car up the road a bit. wonder if that was due in any part to the traffic that would have been moving slowly but steadily, zipping in - suddenly snarling to a halt as the stuff behind a rolling roadblock suddenly had no room to merge as no more gaps were opening.

and the worst bit? some mug in a tanker draws up alongside ME and trys to do it! narnas to that. nipped in front of him into lane 2 and uncorked the bottle.
especially frustrating when the signs clearly encourage you to use both lanes whnen its busy, and the cones come in a fair bit before any works, to protect workers so the whole amount should be used - but cos of some plonkers there’s a mile of empty tarmac before the cones, every now and then.

grrr!

i only drive at night and have long forgotten the “rolling road block”

that is until before christmas at south of leicester , friday night of all nights to close the n/b c-way to one lane , this is at 10.30pm queing for about the best part of 8 miles for what seemed like no apparent reason . eventually seen the roadworks sign … and the cause of the massive hold up ( took me 2 hours to get through) was cars queing in lane 2 and lane 3 and from 1 miles or so away idiots barreling down the hard shoulder and pushing in . a rolling road block was setup , not by me i might add , i stayed in the inside lane and sort of put the trailer halfway over the hard shoulder . i couldnt beleive that people were barreling down the hard shoulder at m-way speed , anyone could have decided they needed the emergency lane … bang …
what was needed was coppers at the roadworks booking the hard shoulder users for definate , and with the cop shop being at fosse park i cant see why not …

and that must be the second time in 3 years of nights i,ve seen a rolling block

I was sat in the jam too. I think it got mentioned on here somewhere - though may have been a month earlier - mid november I think.

I certainly remember seeing a truck straddling to lane 3 and feeling frustrated there was no coppers about to pull the idiot, 1 for entering a lane he shouldn’t have been in, 2 causing an obstruction, and 3 driving without due care and attention.

there’s no wonder that idiots barrel down hard shoulders, or off at junctions and back on to skip traffic when its exaccerbated by equally idiotic drivers creating a rolling roadblock.

the research is done - it makes the problem worse.

unfortunately as they’re not speeding the rozzers don’t care :frowning:

book 'em danno!

This is going to sound a bit complex but here goes. In the old days if the nearside lane was being worked on that was the lane coned off, and likewise outside for outside. Some years ago and I don`t have a clue as to why it was decided that they will always cone off the road from the outside lane even when working on the inside lane. I think that there is in most people (not all of course) an aversion to undertaking so that drivers got into the open lane sooner and traffic flowed better. Was this true?.

Vermeer: it may be true, but IMHO, it’s more dangerous. It forces the larger vehicles (which have larger blind spots, and are less able to accelerate/decelerate to match speed) to merge right, whereas closing the offside lane forces the smaller, more nimble traffic to merge in with slower stuff.

i drive to match my surroundings. if i am in an area with obvious aggressive behaviour then that is how i respond to it. i will close the gap in front of me if there are cars forcing their way in. if they have an accident then that is their problem. i get in lane as soon as i see the signs and i stay there. i wont leave the inside lane but i wont let aggresive drivers cut me up either. if they are courteous, they get flashed in and i ease off a little. if they come flying up the 2nd lane, they get cursed just as they are cursing me.
this may sound unprofessional but i dont care. i treat people as they treat me whether its on the road or in person. same rules apply :exclamation:
