LOL, a bloke in America stating there’s a shortage of drivers in UK
There is no shortage of drivers here mr blinko, however if you read on tinterweb or in a USA rdc you may be daft enough to believe it
I may be in the USA but I am not disconnected from the UK, as I have already said one of my best friends who happens to be the CEO of quite a large UK haulage company has told me there is a shortage and he can’t get drivers, he has blamed it on CPC and as he has lived and breathed transport for over 35 years I believe all he say’s. The whole point of this topic is how hard it is to come by drivers, or did you not notice that ?
So what did your mate do about the DCPC? Some firms paid for their staff to complete it, as well as paying them while attending. Others just paid for the modules while some didn’t do either, a company I was at organised modules for a Saturday, unpaid, and charged the drivers for each module, leaving it to the driver. They are now struggling as they lost a few that refused to do it for them.
If firms are struggling for drivers they have nobody to blame but themselves.
Seth, if you’re “trappy” you are considered to let your trap, or mouth, run without any idea of what you’re talking about. In this case I used it because you, wrongly, assumed that I was going to argue about something that has no real answer.
Conor:
DCPC, cost to driver, £300 but with the amount rates have gone up you’d recoup that in 6 or 7 weeks max if you are full-time. For the remaining 4 years and 46 weeks you’re quids in.
Yet another reason why drivers don’t want to do it, 300 quid is a lot of money to fork out for most hard working people. If you are required to go on the course your employer should pay and that means thieving agencies too.
Could not agree more. Or maybe even if it had been govt subsidized in some way, at least then the more cynical and (less gullible) amongst us may have been convinced it actually was brough it for the official reason stated, and not a money making scam.

£300 is a lot of money but it can be spread out over 5 years so less than £1 a week if drivers can’t afford that they are doing something wrong. Nobody is stopping driving because of the DCPC they may use it as an excuse to stop but that’s all, I have done it and I stopped driving 2 months ago.

i gave up driving because of the dcpc, along with many others, its was the finaly straw for me so please dont say no one has given up driving because of it as its not true,
if the dcpc wasnt forced on us i would still be driving today, i was prepared to make my stand over it as enough is enough 26 years i have been a driver, like so many other old school drivers who have quit hence there is a shortage of good experienced drivers out there
its just a shame in my book that the rest of the drivers didnt stick together and we all refused to do it but there is nothing new drivers are there own worse enemy, they will do all thats required and then moan about it and the pay etc
if drivers rates go up for the guys who got there cpc card based on the fact many of us quit its typical, as they dont deserve a raise in fact they should only pay higher wages to those who will come back to driving who dont have a cpc that would be fair reward and it would rub it in the nose of the goody 2 shoes drivers who moan but dont do anything about it

So you think that by spitting your dummy out and walking away, you will somehow bring about the demise of the DCPC? When you say we should have all stuck together and refused to get a DCPC, did you try and organise something? Or did you sit back and make some disparaging remarks, and hope somebody else would get the ball rolling. The only good thing is that you walked away and created a vacancy for someone who deserves it.

you would say that as your one of the guys who will moan and do nothing
yes i tried to get all the lads in our yard to not do it but they were more scared of polish drivers taking there jobs and also aware that most other drivers wouldnt have the balls to do anything about it either
so for me enough was enough how can i work along side people who just give in and do as there told like a good little boy
i said i was getting out of driving when the digi card came in and then the smoking ban and then trackers being fitted etc but this time the dcpc was the last straw for me i can see were transport is headed and its not the same job as it once was and the new influx of drivers are just dogem car drivers in my eyes, along with how hard it is to find someone who can speak english, so i walked away as did many other guys in my age group i am 52 been a driver for 26 accident free years and a dam good driver, never been done for speeding my life either for that matter
52 and looking for a job which has nothing to do with the career you’ve been doing for the last couple of decades at the back end of a recession?
All I can say is I hope you’ve got plenty of money saved because you may have just forced yourself into early retirement. And all for the sake of £300. Given its been 2 weeks since it was mandatory for everyone you’ve cost yourself a grand or so already because of your stubbornness.
As for where transport is headed, its heading where in my opinion it should’ve gone years ago instead of being stuck in the 60’s as some old relic of the supposed “good old days” which were anything but other than when looked at through rose tinted glasses.
As for the cost, if you can’t find £300 over a 5 year period when you do a job where you’re working 50-70+hrs a week and some with nights out as well then doesn’t that say something about how crap it is? Thank god the DCPC came in and saw rate rises and put wages up to where they should have been compared to 8 years ago instead of being stuck exactly where they were back then or worse.
Connor not sure where you get this £300 from as mine cost me £250 ( yep paid for mine myself this time but now working for a firm who pays for it often mid week & we still get paid for it )
Although money not brilliant there are some perks to it but not bad for this area & liveable

no, I’m one of the MAJORITY of drivers that saw the DCPC as a minor inconvenience, and just got on with it.
yes i tried to get all the lads in our yard to not do it but they were more scared of polish drivers taking there jobs and also aware that most other drivers wouldnt have the balls to do anything about it either

Digi-card and smoking ban have both improved transport, in my opinion. Trackers serve a purpose, so you just learn to live with them.

You’ll have done your CPC by Christmas when you shortly realise you are not qualified or experienced at any other trade and see your bank balance rapidly depleting. By the way, adding to every post that you’ve been driving for 26 yrs, never had an accident and no speeding fines just makes you look a complete ■■■■ after the first one. We hear you, you’re a Driving God.
I never paid a penny for any of my DCPC courses as I made sure I only did them where there were no reimbursement clauses if I left. I’m surprised that there weren’t more people like me who’d planned ahead rather than fork out for it.
I work near a Tesco DC and have noticed a lot of subbies pulling there trailers the last few months. Never seen this other than in December before.
Was talking to a mate who said they just can’t get enough drivers to cover there work.
Many of the tipper and skip firms including where I work are struggling to get drivers despite some paying some very good wages.
I know a few older drivers who packed up this year with the CPC kicking in. But I think it’s a combination of this and not enough younger people coming in to the industry for various reasons over the last 10/15 years.
As for the cpc the current system is a joke but I can see the value in some periodical training but I’m not to bothered as my firm paid for it and for me to sit there
I’ve been driving Class 1 since 1985/6, mid late eighties /early nineties we were earning quite a bit more than nowadays & petrol in my car was approx 79ppl…seems mad! The job is much easier now, better units etc which is obviously a good thing. I only drive part time few days a week so yes I can please myself.
IMO it is a better job nowadays & this old baloney about the good old days …yes for the bosses maybe, the CPC may help wages, not convinced yet but as has been said 70 - 80 hrs were the norm & led to many divorces & bloody csa payments etc ( life’s rich tapestry etc) so anything that reduces working hours & better working conditions has to be better. Another myth I often hear is how unhelpful people are today as opposed to back then , I don’t see that at all , I actually find the younger driver’s & foreign driver’s very helpful & friendly once you break the ice.
I think the guys that left when the cpc came in were about fed up with the job at that point anyway, new blood is always a good thing… said the 58 yr old timer lol

i am a bit smarter than that as i would never have got out of the game if i didnt have a plan b, and i would suggest all drivers look out for the future as you just never know whats ahead or around that next corner

I’ve tried to get out to the point of going to university to get a degree in electronics engineering. A CV with 20 years of truck driving doesn’t help when you’re applying for jobs as an engineer. Unless you’re going to set up your own business then good luck finding a job when you’re competing with thousands of people with recent relevant job experience.

If that’s dagenham your talking about, you should see all the crap on the walls in the waiting room looking for drivers, they seem desperate for them.

Yeah thats the one loads of there motors have ads for drivers on.
health and safety has a lot to do with it, i got the driving bug from school holidays going out with my dad. but you can even take passengers now in case they claim, owner drivers are getting fewer and fewer. people of a cetain age dont want to work yet alone get up at 3am to be talked to like ■■■■ by fork lift drivers, security guards etc.
the dcpc has sod all to do with it as almost all have done it if you look at the figures and natural wastage. what should be more alarming is almost 20% of drivers are getting near retirement age and about 35% are over 50!
and after years of being paid a pittance its about time drivers started holding out for what decent money.
