Are all skip company's run by

I’m coming to the conclusion that all skip company’s are run by total a holes, is it just the ones i have encountered or have other found this to be the case too ?

As a cyclist; hearing those chains clanking as one approaches from behind is one of the most scary sounds whilst on the road … I just get off the bike until they are passed. Presumably it is the time pressure and the min wage (minus deductions like breaks and use of cab heater and windscreen) that causes the drivers to be so vengeful.

So you’ve worked for Grundons’ then?
TBH the clanking chains tend to be the tin pot companies running old tat (most newer ones have those strap things).
I think the bad attitude stems from not being allowed to strap dolls and cuddly toys to the grilles anymore. That, and the fact I don’t think the drivers can keep any scrap finds nowadays. To their credit, the drivers around here wont mind if you get in their cabs and make a mess (they woukdn’t notice it)

I don’t know, I did a year, working for a small family run business round my local area, family are gypsys but they are bloody awesome people, nicest people I could ever work for. Pay was below crap but I was never rushed, just plodded on steadily and relaxed back in the yard while I waited to tip. I know what you mean though, OP, there are a couple of larger companies round the area too and their drivers drive like absolute tossers! I know some companies demand a certain amount of skips delled and colled every day and when you go to several places that are awkward or the customer is being a general customer (■■■■■■■ arese) then it does set you back so it does tend to change ones attitude toward driving. Guess it depends who you work for!

I’ve seen skips delivered and once the skip wagon has gone a digger driver or forkie has pushed/dragged the skip into a nigh on irretrievable position.

Some (not all) tipper drivers come a close second to (many) skip drivers…

Always want more loads… always want others to put their driving licenses on the line - mugs game if you get drawn into that mentality

getting even further off topic … my mate had a skip that we had filled with mainly wood, seemed a shame to waste money getting it emptied, so we lit it, didn’t quite predict how fiercely it would burn, the sides started to glow. When it finally went out it had distorted into this round blackened shape (as viewed from above) so I borrowed the big bucket from the farm and battered the sides to make it more skip shape. We filled it full of rubble and requested a collection and another skip. We thought we would be in big trouble (don’t know how much a new skip costs) but the driver couldn’t have been less interested, he left a nice new bright yellow one and didn’t even say ‘can you please be a little more careful with this one lads’!

Even further off topic. I didn’t realise accommodation was so scarce around Manchester until yesterday. I was delivering to a company that had a big skip in the yard, it had a sticker on it that read, Refuse not Refuge, if you suspect someone is living in this skip contact the following number, 0800etc.

When I was driving a rear end loader (no pun intended) I backed uhyhhhp to a cardboard skip behind an electrical retailers and attached the chains to lift and crush the card only to lift the large piece of cardboard off the top to see three children playing inside as they had made a den. It really shook me up at the time thinking what could have happened if I had not checked the bin.
I have spoken to other drivers who mainly drive the front end loaders that have picked up tramps ect and only noticed just in time, you can check these bins but they tend to hide deep inside the cardboard for warmth.

The skip and tipper firms are most likely to give a newbee a start ,when others wouldnt.I once turned up with a skip to a building site and told the “builders” that I didnt want any old rubbish in my skip. There sense of humour had already been removed sadly. You dont have to drive likea knob just because your work mates do.

Skip lorry drivers eh :grimacing:youtu.be/pTIUB5oxKqI

Not all firms are bad, last skip firm I worked for were pretty good, no rushing, 7am till 5pm, could take what you wanted out the skip but had to be before you got to the yard and was £10 hr…and it’s not the company in the video, that was a co i was on for 6/7 yrs ago in Anglesey.

Proper drivers. :stuck_out_tongue:

And those sort don’t even pay the best wages, but they do operate Scanias. :unamused:
Some even have Facebook pages where they post political crap about fair fuel prices and then post photos of their latest set of spotlights, and frilly curtains with matching engine hump covers.
Meanwhile back to skips, are tip trophies now tax deductable? Not many on the grilles anymore.

I drove for a scrap metal merchant for less than two weeks… what a bloody shambles. No chains, well I did have two chains, but no dogs, you ever tried tying a dolly knot in a chain. :unamused: Straps that had seen better days and a mobile phone (company supplied) that never stopped ringing ffs. Asked three times for some dogs and decent straps. Nothing happened so I was out, not on very good terms.
