Apprentice young drivers scheme

A congratulations to 17 year old Jack Billet who will have all his licences paid for by a large haulier in Somerset, his car,lgv 2, and lgv 1 will be paid for by the firm, at the moment he is learning the trade as a drivers mate on local multi drop pallet work.
Will Shiers from Commercial Motor paid him a visit applauding the firm for the oppurtunity to learn the ropes the old fashioned way.
With the ban of passengers at most delivery sites, this does not give many chances for young drivers to learn the trade.
Jacks relation who is a full time UK driver at the same firm has served in the British Army has a tank transport driver around the world. If you see his truck on the road with the name plate of Shaggy on a MAN last digits PMY give him a flash or a toot of the horn. I posted the offer of the above chance to get all the licences paid for , but not ONE person showed an interest or Pm d me for contact information or more details on to how to apply for the apprentice scheme.

Probably because;

  1. Most of us on this forum already have the necessary licenses.
  2. Most of us are too old to be apprentices.
  3. Most of us thought you’d missed your medication again.

In what’s being discussed, the word “apprentice” doesn’t have the same meaning that you’re probably thinking of.

Toby,

My congratulations go to Jack, and I hope he does well at his chosen career path, because it seems to be what he wants to do.

I wouldn’t comment on why nobody PM’ed you, except to say that you are in charge of your own reputation on TN.

I want to be an ‘apprentice’ ADR driver but nobody will give me a chance…:frowning:

“Apprentise Driver” you takin the p or what?

An apprentise learns a skilled job over 5 years not a bloody drivers licence over 2 weeks.

You think driving a truck is a skilled job? Open your eyes and see some of the muppets out there driving the bloody things. You can import these vegatables from any eastern european state you care to name.

Dont insult apprentiships eh.

Have you got anything good to say or are you just on here to neg every one out?

A young lad got off his back side and put some effort in to develop himself and all you can do is slate him and hgv drivers. How about giving the lad some encouragement for not being a lay about for goodness sake.

Have a word with yourself and sort out whatever’s giving you this negative view of the world, or else just remember if you’ve nothing good to say, say nothing.

Does the truth hurt? shame.

Is 37 too old for an apprenticeship?
I would love for someone to pay for me to get my class one. :frowning:

a young lad didnt get off his backside he was offered a career on a plate thats an insult making it sound like he worked for it cause he put his name forward

plus lets not forget as stated his relative works there

Congratulations to Jack, it must be a big company, their insurance premium will be huge. I most definitely couldn’t afford to put a 17 yo behind the wheel of my pickup let alone an artic.

I think its great the young one is getting is licenses,so they say any way but to call it a apprenticeship is wrong.truck driving is not a trade,a trade is a skilled career.i spent 4 hard years getting my trade with tests in between and a skills test at the end, which if i failed ment i wasted 4 years.to say this young one is learning a trade is actually insulting.its a 4 day course with a 1 hour test.then a bit of on job training which is about a week.not very skilled is it.its great he has a job now.i dont mean to offend anyone but trucking aint rocket science

nearly there:
.i dont mean to offend anyone but trucking aint rocket science

Its not no but why do so many people zb it up…?

Surely he had to get off his backside to put his name forward

If it’s so un skilled surely anything over £6.19 is a good wage then?

Driving a lorry is not a trade.

I’m a time-served tradesman. It took me three years to do an apprenticeship, although I now drive a lorry.

Driving a lorry is NOT a trade!

On another note, why does no-one call them lorries these days?

Lorry driving is a profession, much higher than a trade.
