When filling an application form in, has anyone ever heard of a company requiring a copy of a birth certificate and proof of national insurance number? (eg, letter from a government agency)
Thought it was a bit wierd.

Think your right it is a bit weird, wonder if it’s to do with all the illegals that are in the country now.
I don’t see it as a problem, just really checking to see you are who you say you are. Also with the national insurance number they will require that anyway for your tax, so at some stage you will have to give it to them anyway.
Its posdible that with the new regulation on employment and I don’t know them fully, they are covering there ■■■ in the respect of your entitlement to work in the uk if you are a foreign national, so that they don’t get a £10, 000 fine for not doing the checks and employing someone thats not entitled to work here.
In that case they would have to ask eveyone who applies the same questions on an application form or else they might fall foul of some discrimination law but that’s only a guess
Yes I’ve had to produce my passport/birth certificate on applying for jobs. If I recall there was a bit of a stink when a member of the cabinet (Labour member of the house of Lords?)was found to be employing staff who were not entitled to be working in the UK.
Was interesting when I used my expired passport at the last round of checks and mischievous when I asked what had happened to the original copy that I gave on joining the company while blathering on about data protection and such like.
I’ve given a pay slip as proof of NI number.
I too had to provide proof of identity and also showed my expired passport. The clerk triumphantly pointed out that it had expired, I told him “it’s still me!”

In my case the passport pic showed I once had hair…

Thanks for clearing that up
