Anything to avoid paying a decent rate

Looking at jobs at indeed.com (mostly to entertain myself - some of them ads are pure comedy) some companies/agencies will offer a range of ‘benefits’ to substitute a decent pay rate or to avoid advertising the pay rate at all - some examples:

Class 1 Night Trunk Driver - £12.04 an hour (where that .04 came from…the ■■■■■■■ Free, full uniform & PPE

Unique online system, collating pay slips and other information

Refer a friend scheme: Earn £500 for referrals
Access to our Colleague Assistance Programme, where you can speak to a trained counsellor on any issues including, money troubles, alcohol and drug abuse, illness, relationship difficulties or bereavement which may be affecting you at home or work.

A range of employee benefits, such as Holiday Discounts, Sharesave Scheme & Pure Gym Discounts

Of course £12 an hour isn’t bad (just ok considering it’s night work and no OT/weekend rates) but they don’t specify whether it’s for PAYE or LTD but hey at least if you have drug and alcohol issues you will get free counseling … wtf

Competitive salary.
Bonus scheme.
Overtime at an enhanced rate.
Staff social fund (money for team building exercises etc.)
Health & Wellness (annual flu jab, free eyesight tests etc.)
Loyalty holidays.
Option to buy/sell holidays
22 days plus bank holidays.
Contributory pension
Progression due to the growth of our business (new divisions, depots etc.)

you’ll enjoy loads of benefits such as a staff social fund, child care voucher scheme and loyalty holidays. Our in-house Learning & Development Team are dedicated to giving you the skills you need to be your best and as a company we are always keen to promote internally.

Annual flu jab, lol. Childcare- what if you don’t have kids or they’ve grown up…team building? Uh…Progression - towards what? I’m applying to be a driver, where does this career path lead to? A…senior driver? A driver trainer/assessor? They just copy/pasted their standard ‘recruitment.doc’ with no regard to the position they’re recruiting for. And of course, competitive salary but then 'All you have to do is apply with your CV highlighting your current package and salary expectations and we can take it from there.’

On another note Stobbarts have stopped advertising for drivers on their website. Last Tuesdaythere were 12 openings for the Midlands, today there is a total of 1 driver position nationwide, it’s for a shunter :unamused:

Why do you think these jobs need to be advertised?
Why do companies paying proper money not need to advertise?

Solution, find jobs that don’t get advertised, use loaf find job get job look after it live happily ever after, the end.

I applied for a job recently which was £13.50 days. My first question was, is this LTD or PAYE although deep down I already knew.

Astonishingly this rate also included your holiday pay. When you stripped everything back the actual rate wasn’t much over £10, a rate I was on many many years ago.

Needless to say they didn’t hear from me again. This is yet another sneaky way the advertised rates are being inflated. Indeed is a waste of time, I see the same jobs rehashed every day/week with the odd company offering direct work with them. Its these jobs you need to watch out for though none have really piqued my interest since I’ve been looking.

No ‘benefits’ to compensate for the low rate? ■■■■. At least around here you can get childcare vouchers and free gym membership or free tea/coffee or ‘be a part of a fast growing international company’.

Heavy-metal-Hodge:
loading and unloading bathroom goods to customers (retailers/wholesalers) on assigned routes

You can bet that translates as manual handling loads of heavy awkward stuff from/to wherever the customer wants it put.Or to put it another way how to wreck your back and with it career and future job prospects in a matter of months. No surprise that there are numerous similar type jobs permanently advertised from light vans to class 1.The manual handling angle being more of an issue than the money.I’d happily accept minimum wage for a job that says no manual handling as opposed to anything paying more that requires it.

.
.
£20,000 - £21,000 per year is really bad wages for class 1.

No, no benefits whatsoever, not that i think things that companies list are benefits anyway ie, free parking, cycle to work and all that other crap.

What i would call real benefits would be either :-

  1. Come into work for 365 days without causing any damage to anything and we’ll give you an extra £9,000 on top of your years wage.

  2. Attend work for every shift for 365 days without been late or sick and we’ll give you £2,000 on top of your years wages.

Or… pay a decent rate in the first place with decent T’s & C’s and kick out the ‘drivers’ that are useless.

That job is a piece of cake, you’ll spend most of your shift asleep. They have parking slots for wagons so no free for all like Fradley Park and they have yard marshalls who will wake you up when you’re due to go in. Nice clean well lit place, somewhere warm to sit down, cooking facilities (microwave) available, decent toilets.

Might not be the best pay in the world but depending on what depot you’re from you could get 6/7hrs kip on pay between tipping and reloading.

anything similary advertised usually equates to…labourer with the ability to occasionally drive .

That’s a much simpler and better way of putting it.

Tory Britain

Half the agency jobs in my area are for Stobarts… not through Stobart’s agency (the logistics people) but through all kinds of different agencies… But if you go on their website they have absolutely 0 Class 1 driver jobs, which is weird, they always have jobs advertised… something fishy going on.

Packing shelves in aldi or lidl would earn you more money for 45 hours its embarrassing what some people work for and no doubt they will fill the jobs

Yeah I noticed last week. My guess is they know they’re going south so don’t want to hire as the more jobs that go BOOM when they do, the more vilified they will be by the media

Just found out that ‘free gym’ means ‘take these here cages and push/pull them from truck to store and then those other cages from the store to the truck’. Pretty good workout for legs (quads), upper and lower back, core strength, biceps/triceps, and forearms.
