A CB radio is only as good as the antennae. You can have the smallest and cheapest little Midland radio and hook it to a K40 or a Modulator with a good ground plain and it will be better than a huge expensive Cobra hooked to a cheap antennae.
Yeah looks like online is the best place to get the gear will most probably be cheaper aswel. That’s seems to be right Pat definitely worth spending the extra on a decent Antenna from what I’ve been hearing.

And as for Lymm services… Bit far to travel in a tractor…

well the west coast scots and the tangs seem to use the autotranslate button quite easily as being ulster scots or ■■■■ relatons the closer you get to Donegal means there all kindred spirits, its the foriegners south of Carlisle that wont have a clue…
example 1 as follows…interprete this
( this is for the 75 that runs east/west)…yin there southboun yer clean to the moss, the big cars just jooked in ahint the bing roon fae the teapot,an the ither wans hedin fir the pen sae eftir that yir fine .

The Moss used to do some braw mince and tatties.
Translate that nae bawthr breaker, you needed to if you were on the violin.
Used to have one in the “Aunty Mary” days.
Even with an external speaker,i could hardly hear a thing over the engine noise in my trusty Leyland Fg
when I worked for NTS in the late 70s.
Would be interesting to know if anybody on here ever got prosecuted by “Busby”,for using one ?

Ground Plane. Reflecting metal surface attached to the ground wire of your aerial, to reflect the radio waves.

Got pulled by them a few times around 80ish but just chucked it under the bunk. I even had one in my car in those days.
The legal ones were never as good a range, used them up to about 1999 and got sick of it…far too many d.heads on it, so knocked it on the head.

Btw…‘Auntie Mary days’ ■■?
That’s what we used to call the AM sets in these parts
They used to be invaluable in the 80’s/ 90’s for getting directions in towns etc… always someone local to guide you about… and used to like the old ladies who had a home setup and would chat all night to truckers lol. I recall around London a lot of the guys who were going into the Blackwall or Dartford tunnels would pipe up on the radio “I’m going in chaps, tally ho!”

lolipop:
I have a set up at home for Ham use,out of curiosity only the other day,I flicked through the CB frequencies,NOTHING all the way through from 1-40 even on SSB
Not something as a ham I would confess to on a public forum.
