Anyone Remember These Companies

Seeing those photo’s of Sid’s trucks jogged a memory lodged long ago in the back of my mind !!
Mick Underwood – now there is a name from long ago – an O/D from either Stewkley or Soulbury – used to subbie on UK for H.G.Brown and I seem to recall him doing work for Sid !!

That’s a bit of knowledge I’ve gained – Sid did the De La Rue out of Frenches Ave ?
Was Alf Gray ever traffic manager at Sid’s as I recall he always had a hand in that job ?
Was a great run to Eire if the ferry crossing wasn’t to rough !!

:astonished: Mick Underwood - I remember Mick, he used to be out in a little place called Hollingdon , he was a lovely chap, had a son called Andy - the last time I saw Andy he was the Transport manager for a firm that used to cart Bread and rolls in Kingston MK, no longer there though, Underwoods also used to subbie for Holtons on the Coke job had 2 red F10’s, I’ve got a feeling that Mick died some years ago

littlerichard:

The driver of this F12 was Tony smith [selwyn] one of two vehicles bought new the other driven by John wood [woody] both units later being converted to six wheelers for 38 ton.

I remember seeing them around quite abit in the 80`s, always wondered if they actually ran down to malta?

BuzzardBoy:
Anyone remember any of the folowing companies from Leighton Buzzard and have any pictures etc…

ECE - Light Blue and white, mainly Scania 112’s and F12’s
Sidney J Edwards - Red Volvo’s mainly, used to do a bit of European
JLS Haulage Contractors - Any old [zb], used to do GPG work from Dunstable, then latterly a bit of European.

And any other Leighton Buzzard based comapnies from the 70’s and 80’s. I know there were quite a few more as L/B was quite a popular Transport town.

Just curious if anyone knows anything about them.

Sounds like the Mick I knew – I’m sorry if he has died but I suppose I’m reaching the age when I get invited to more funerals than weddings !
I recall he lived “out in the sticks” & I’ve a feeling he had a bit of land - smallholding or farm !
You’re right he was a real nice bloke !!

AFAIK it as the job out of Dunstable… Years later we did the very same job on PTM out of DLR Dunstable to Lisburn(NI) and Bray(Eire)

Yeah they did run to Malta, Blondie Wright was a regular on that run…

The yard at Hollingdon is still there, and i think there is still a sign on the gate to Underwood Transport, Its down a right poxy little lane mind!
The Bread Roll Co. in Milton Keynes IIRC was Coolcore.Rathbones, back in about 1997 before it all got moved up North…

Do you remember/have any photo’s of Sid’s F10 that rolled at the bottom of Wing Hill/Bunkers Lane in LB back in about 1985… truck had been reported for defetive brakes before, but no fault was found… When they tried it after the accident they worked fine too…I remember it was loaded with some kind of black dust on a flat(Pardon my ignorance of it), and it went everywhere…

Cracking Photo’s by the way, got anymore…

Ref truck that overturned – it was loaded with “carbon black” but for the life of me I cannot recall the drivers name I’m afraid !!

Cant remember the driver who rolled over with a load of carbon black. It was horrible stuff a very fine powder that got everywhere even if you kept your windows closed. Was loaded into tote bins from overhead gantry you only had to rope them but remember not over the bin lids. We loaded at a company called selvaco (if spelt correct) at avonmouth (still there) or ellesmore port. Would deliver to the rubber company at dunstable, a place in hertford or sometimes croydon. The transport man then was Alf gray ( passed away) and Peter jackson. Alf was a good friend of Bert winkfield (died last year) and before Sid worked for Stag tankers. Some more drivers of that time Geoff cox, Robin davies (sometimes see him) Dave robinson, Gordon eaves, John davies, Derek delaney. There was also three lads as drivers mates on handball tiles (where i started) David and Kenny fry, Robert cox (son of Geoff) and Darren flynn in the workshop and at tmes a mate. The malta work for De la Rue was first trip by Sid himself and Tony smith (selwyn) and then Blondie (john wright) John wood (woody) and i believe a trip by Robin davies. Mick underwood was from hollingdon, i viewed a F10 there but didnt buy it, Dave mead who drives for Pete Hawkins his dad drove for Mick.

Alf Gray another name I know - sorry to hear he’s died - think he was at Dawson’s when I first met him (could be wrong as it was over 30+yrs ago) - but I definitely remember him as traffic manager for Geoff Reynolds !!

Sorry to ■■■■ in, tried this on an Oxford thread with not much joy so thought you chaps might help. Looking for info on couple of lads I went to school with in Oxford, ran as Dykes Bros. contracted for Crendon Concrete out Aylesbury way. seem to remember they had orange Leylands but that might have been Crendon’s colours. It is their livery, sign writing etc I am interested in. Thanks. :?

Sorry cant help with info you require but do remember crendon concrete.

littlerichard.
Thanks for your reply anyway mate, I was getting a complex! :open_mouth: as I have put a few posts on lately with no response. I was beginning to think I had been put up a cul-de-sac, like where I could see the posts but nobody else could!!

My memory isn’t what it was I’m afraid – but I seem to recall an owner driver who ran a couple of trucks out of Crendon Concrete way back in '80s (■■) – not sure of spelling of his surname but it was Mick Rixson or Rickson I think. If you are in a position to look him up he may possibly be able to help you !!
Best of luck !!

The name Alf Gray rings a bell in my mind too. Could it be that he was at Ian Cheverall’s at Luton at some point? Would be around '80/'81 I would think.

I remember Alf Gray from over 30+ years ago (when I was on tankers) & I thought he was at Dawson’s Leighton Buzzard – or was it Stag’s ■■
Alf was definitely Geoff Reynolds traffic manager in Leighton Buzzard & Dunstable – lost track & contact with him after that !!
Do not remember if he was at Cheveralls Luton (were you ?) !!
More “local” companies – Mike Hall from Bletchley – Alan Wheeler also from Bletchley !!

Mike Hall - He was involved somewhere with the whole Supergun affair IIRC wasnt he■■? (the Dad of Paul Ashwell’s Missus i think, CPC holder of Ben Haulage maybe?)

Big Leggy:

!

Yes, along with my late brother, John Marker, and a host of drivers who I can picture but whose names have become victim to the lost corners of my memory :unamused:

That’s him – spot on !! At one time also had the pub in Fenny Stratford or Bletchley just over canal on old A5 – was it The Swan ? Whatever happened to Mike ? I last heard of him years ago (Iraq big gun) & rumour was he was off to Spain (Javea) !! I first knew him when he had trucks running as Union Freight or Anglo Espania !!
Alan Wheeler had a yard just before the canal on the same stretch as pub – ran car transporters – great rugby enthusiast if I recall correctly !!
