Rightly or wrongly I thought the driver WAS ultimately responsible for the load, regardless of who loaded it or who caused the accident?

Yes but it doesn’t neccesarily mean he was driving carelessly though, does it?

I was referring to Qhunter’s arrogant assumption that I, or other members on this forum, have never worked with steel before!

Brummie. I was making no assumption where you were concerned, after all you were about the first to trash the “lynch him” postings. As for my reply, I stand by it.
Anyone who has carried that stuff will know how bloody tricky it is to carry and will probably think, as I did, that only difference between the driver in the photograph and me was that I was somewhat luckier not to have it move like that.
ive never carried steel but used to be a plater welder so i know what it’s like and its bloody slippy just now im working in leeds at tetley’s brewery on nights and when you do the induction they give you all horror stories of loorys turning over and pics of lorrys who have slammed on for what ever reason and all the kegs coming through the curtains.
so with metal kegs in thier wisdom all the trailers have metal beds!!!
i would like to add my pennysworth about this type of accident unless the firm has ordered that the headboard be made stronger when they had it built then the firm is responsible in that it should have instructed the drivers when loading this type of goods to ensure that the headboard was
reenforced by adding wooden sleepers and ensureing thatthey were secure
the firm next to us had one bad accident invovleing the transport from steel after the H&S experts had finished the firm then modified the headboard so that as and when required the headboard could be reenforced and so helping to prevent such a incident happening again
A added story i had to load 24tns of oiled steel loaded on pallets i took time and i thought enough effort with the loadrestraining,also my driveing was extra carefull, sorry but it was not good enough enroute theload shifted
and when i got to the yard we had to rearrange the load and nail secure strips of wood along both sides of the trailer and add more straps this load was deliverd next day by another driver, he also had the load shift on him and he was driveing properly,as well,

Just fighting to get loaded to have a Balance on the Trailer to operate the Lorry safe on the Road as they load most 150kg Pallets on Front mand 1000kg Pallets on Back as they changed now,loaded one Week corect and sent my Saturday morning with havy Pallets on left side,and not heavy Pallets on right side with the words southbond:watch your Feet’s if i see you Tuesday morning here again
