In todays post I recieved a letter from a company called OPTIMA, specifically Optima Area 11 Infrastructure Management, from Tamworth Staffs.
The letter read…
Dear Sir,
Area 11 Optima Infrastructure Management
M6 Motorway - Incident: Vehicle Debris on 10 - Jan 2006
-
This company, under it’s agreement to manage the maintenance of the M6 MOTORWAY, will inform the Highways Agency of the vehicle debris, which occured on 10 - Jan - 2006. A vehicle Registration number Y** **X has been reported to have been involved. I understand that the vehicle was owned or driven by you on the day of the incident.
-
This company has to arrange to make good any damage or recover any costs incurred on behalf of the Highways Agency. The costs have to be recovered from the person(s) responsible for the damage. The Police report that the vehicle owned or driven by you appears to have been involved in the incident. We suggest that you send the enclosed copy of this letter to your insurance company for their attention. They should note that all Trunk roads (including Motorways) and their infrastucture, for which the Secretary of State for Transport is the Highways authority, are not insured and that the Agency does not compromise.
3.It is a legal requirement to confirm whether or not you were insured at the time the incident occured and to disclose the name and address of your insurance company. Please reply in writing by return of post. In your reply please include this information together with your insurance policy number and quote my ref number //**
I have no idea what this is all about!?
This company has not said what the alleged incident was, where on the M6 this alleged incident took place, or at what time.
No incident was reported by my driver (trusted 100%).
I’ve contacted the West Midlands Traffic Police, who have stated that no incident has been recorded against that vehicle registration, and even ran a PNC check, coming up with nothing.
Anyone else had dealings with this company?
Any Idea’s?!

Scarey suspect letter there.

Are they saying you vehicle had some sort of discharge ?

I don’t know, it doesn’t say
Tramper I would write back requesting when, where and what the alledge incident was and whereabouts it took place along with the reason they beleive that one of your vehicles was responsible. Giving them 14 days to respond with all relevant information and proof.
They have a legal right to provide you with this information and do put in the letter that you have checked with the local police and that they have no record of anything.
To me it sounds like a bully tactic, play them at their own game.
I had a similar thing and when I went back demanding more information it was dropped.
Good luck
Stuff sending them a letter i would be paying them a visit and ask what they are on about, sounds like bullying to me to.
pass it on to your insurance co and let their legal team deal with it.
I would assume that you have checked against the date to see if your wagon was actually travelling the M6 that day, if you are able to prove where it left from and where it went to, if it never travelled the M6 its job done surely
i personally would refuse to give them any details unless they can come up with a specific time and pace and datails of the “incident”. they say your legally responsible to provide details of your insurance but thats only the case if your vehicle was actually involved in an accident! if you provide details you’ll find they will then deal directly with your insurance and you will have very little say in what happens, even if it’s a scam claim! it’s quite possible there’s been an incident involving someone elses wagon who have then passed details of your vehicle as a witness to take themselves out of the frame.
Sounds like a scam to me…If the police have no incident recorded…I would not be giving any details to an organisation other than the Police or Vehicle inspectorate.
Regards
Andy Banwell
Optima are the people that are responsible for the safety crews that work on the motorways… I have worked with them in the past…

However, their website is having a few “issues” at the moment.
Some links for you:

highways.gov.uk (search on Optima)
Also if you google for “Optima Infrastructure” and “Tamworth” then you should be rewarded with some hits.
Ideally you need to contact the people/person who sent the letter to confirm all the details they have and what your vehicle collided with / left / dropped etc. Also who reported it? How did they report it and whom to if the Police do not have any details??
I was planning to phone them today, but I have decided that the best course of action is to reply in writing, asking all the questions for which answers were omitted from their letter. I spoke to my Insurance broker today and he seems to think its a standard letter sent out to chance their arm, some will be frightened and pay up, he has offered to write to this company to find out what its all about, without getting the actual insurer involved, he’s a good bloke.
So other than that, I have no news to relate, as soon as I do however, I shall let y’all know. Rest assured, I won’t let this lie.
sounds like the call i got last week.the caller said i had hit his car in liverpool and wanted my insurance doc’s told him to send me a letter with all the details and i would pass them on to my insurance company.as a o/d i knew i did hit any thing.when the letter came though the box it said one of my lorries hit his car in the rear then drove off without stopping and all this happen on a wedesday around 11.30.am.as i only own one lorry and was at the test station in mitcham at that time thought scam going on here.i phone the chap up and told him as a over sight our insurance had run out and he should in form his insurance company and the police if he wished.i phoned my insurance company and was told this is a well known scam in the area.this is not the first time i have received letters like this.seems manchester and liverpool have the biggest problems.thought i’ll post this just to warn others

This is the sort of thing that needs it’s own thread. The original thread is legit. Yes, I know what you’re thinking but I have worked with these guys. It’s usually repairing parts of the road network, such as signs and the like…
They’re the people in the area that look after traffic management as well.
UPDATE:
I sent a letter on ther 5th of March, inviting this company to elaborate upon their claim, stating that neither my driver or the Motorway Police have any knowledge of said “incident”. My letter went on to give this company 14 days to supply me with details and accompanying eveidence, and after 1 month and 10 days, no reply has been recived.
I now consider this matter to be closed.
