As said 1st drop down at Horndean, easiest way seems M6-M40-A34-M3-M27-A3 or had a quick look at map and can do following M6-M40-A34-A31-A272-A3 but the A272 is a red route so dont know wether its a good road or not??
Could be worth less hassle just going motorway off the A34 as oppose to red route roads, never liked them on the maps and try to avoid unless someone RECCOMENDS it.
Im looking at coming onto the A272 from the A34 Winchester side (Red Route Road) but from Petersfield onwards it seems a handy enough road the A272 according to map anyways.
Hi Scottishcruiser,
From M3 take J4, A331 south, join A31 to-wards Alton. At Alton take A32 south to A272 and left to Petersfield. Good road I use it quite often at night to break up the monotony.

Then that would mean going away down the M25 then onto M3… Mind I am coming from Scotland here
Yeah according to tomtom and multimap theres only so many miles in it between the m27 or A272 but the time saving is more than the mileage so I will head down the M27 then back up A3.
When you come down the A34, you go straight over the M3, stay in left hand lane at end of 34. Then you go down to next roundabout and turn left, then to next roundabout and U turn to be able to go up the 272. Not a bad road if you have time to spare, as its hilly and several lower limits and fairly narrow in places. But, i’ve used it many times, makes a nice change sometimes.
I personally think Sussex is the worst county you could ever drive a truck in. It is a beautiful part of the world, unaltered by the Luftwaffe, medieval in many parts. It has a completely distinctive style of building, wooden-built and white painted. Nowhere else in the country is like it. But Sussex roads are as unaltered as the villages built along them hundreds of years ago.
Old Harry’s advice on Sussex is to go there as a tourist, and avoid it as a trucker!
Personally whenever I’ve had a load out of thatcham running down to the Petersfield/Horndean area I’ve found it quicker to use the 272 rather than the motorway. With a heavy load my truck struggles abit on the big hill coming off the 31 but apart from that it’s pretty free flowing
