I purchased a 3 year old volvo from Maritime/Secondhand Trucks on the buy with work scheme. Basically, the truck was fantastic and the backup/warranty was brilliant, couldnāt fault it. Unfortunately, the rates are rubbish.

Thatās the thing, basically the Maritime Buy to Work scheme means buying a top-priced truck to do bottom-priced work and that is only ever going to end in tears before bedtime.
Far better to buy the best truck you can afford privately, and a trailer too, so nobody can rip you off on hire charges. Then get yourself an ADR licence, and a waste licence, and only do local work. Refuse all distance work. If you are pressured to do any, only do it on the pretence that extra local work is available before you go, or on your return, but far better not to do any at all. If you are thinking of working for Maritime, I would assume there would be a Freightliner depot in the vicinity, approach them and any other big operators in the area about the availability of work, so you have options if refusal to commit fiscal suicide offends. They will soon ring you back for local work when they get busy. They all will, as long as you are not rude with any refusal. Forget the new wagon until you have been doing it for quite a while, and busy enough for higher payments to offset your tax liabilities.
