Anyone became a HGV mechanic after 25? or know the How-To?

Hi guys

I’m a new class 2 driver and was wondering if anyone became a hgv mechanic after 25. I do love working on cars and have done a lot of work mechanically. Jobs for a hgv mechanic seem to be paying a decent salary so im interested in or having thoughts on becoming a hgv mechanic but was wondering where? how much? how long? etc

I say after 25 because apprenticeships are normally for ages 16-24 or something (I’m 30)

Advice and replies will be appreciated.

Many thanks.

Go to were ever you wish to work, if you already have some experience and can show your willingness to do the job, you shouldn’t have much trouble, most dealerships are crying out skilled or semi skilled, staff.

I thought the new apprenticeship scheme did not have an age barrier, as the rha are pushing for c drivers to be able to train for ce. so a thirty year old spanner man should be ok for training. thirty year old, how did I get this old so fast, im sure I only blinked.

I became a hgv fitter at 32, I sent loads of cv’s out then when that didn’t work I went round and spoke to them directly as it’s a lot harder to ignore you when you’re standing in front of them. The money and shifts are excellent but it’s hard work in the beginning being on your feet and working above your head for 12 hours.
You shouldn’t have a problem with the apprenticeship side of things it’s just convincing someone to take you on. Another way in might be working for them collecting and delivering trucks then asking for more responsibility.

Our place has just taken on a 26yr old apprentice, most of the mechs not happy as they reckon hes stolen a job from a 16yr old who they could mould into what they want.
Quite a few hgvs mechs start later 18/19/20 isnt unusual, older is certainly rare in my experience.

Any Daf dealer would be a good place to start asking as they do all sorts of work not just Daf trucks.

I would say as a rough rule of thumb your average hgv mech is earning in 40 hrs what yuor average driver does in 50/60 hours.
