Unlimited then really, we’ve got at least 1 driver who lives in his truck all year round

What about returning to base to download card/charts ?

No idea, maybe he has a machine, I used to d/load the cards and the machines for 5 trucks at the place I used to work, because there was only 5 trucks here, not worth having a manager up here, then I’d email the info to the boss.

The vu has to be downloaded every 56 days but that doesn’t mean you need to return to base.

I used 1 like this, which backed the cards and VU onto an SD card, then I emailed the info to the company.

I was months away,i got trailers sent over to any French port, then back down the road, time off was doing the laundry at Ouistreham,or bike the 7 miles to Caen past the Pegasus bridge.

Where do you get the rule that says you can’t take your weekly rest period in a truck?

According to regulation (EC) 561/2006:

Where a driver chooses to do this, daily rest periods and reduced weekly rest periods away from base may be taken in a vehicle, as long as it has suitable sleeping facilities for each driver and the vehicle is stationary.

you can take your weekly rest in the truck. you can have christmas in there if you want.
there are loads of places to get your card downloaded.
6 weekly checks can be done by the driver, or at a dealers.
staying away for several weeks is ideal for me. i then take a few days off. maybe finish on wednesday, and start again on sunday.
i stay in hotels from time to time, but only if they are very cheap, but look expensive.

I think the regulations state that you can take a reduced weekly rest in a vehicle equipped with a bunk but no mention of a full weekly rest. This can be interpreted that a full weekly rest cannot be taken in a vehicle, but dont think anyones ever been done for it :open_mouth:

Yeah but they weren’t the regulations I was talking about.

Well, that is the regulation which says that reduced weekly rests can be taken in a vehicle, so by implication 45 hour weekly rests cannot be. It has been discussed on here before, and while it’s never been enforced in the past, more than one person has said that the French police are starting to take an interest in it.

I wonder how much the fine would be under VOSA totting up rules! i.e 45 hours at £30 or £60 an hour would be a very expensive rest! :open_mouth:

Surprised it doesn’t happen already in Spain!

Easy… Pitch a tent at the side of the truck.

No limit of any sort, we used to have drivers on Concord who would be out for 8 months.

Yes, by my understanding that would be sufficient to comply with the letter of the law. Or a hotel etc.

Realistically, there is no limit as to how long you can be a way though, rock 'n roll tours usually last several months for example.

If the law could be framed so that eastern European trucks could no longer spend the entire time running loads around western Europe, then I’d be all in favour.

Hey Pat…drivers on an aeroplane wouldnt be affected anyway…

Just kidding…a good company in its day though…
