Also, on the same estate is Owens!

I worked for Owens for about 18 months. Reasonable kit, but poor money; paid by the day, no overtime and you only get £40 per day if you’re on booked holiday. Apparently they laid 50 drivers off just before Christmas, if the bloke who rang our firm up for a job is to be believed. Usually the lay-offs occur after the holidays.

In fairness there are a lot of drivers on their books who’ve been there for years, so it can’t be all bad.

money is poor at owens then again most driving jobs are, alway’s paid overtime and full rate for a holiday shift, 2 drivers were laid off at bridgend depot not sure about llanelli definetly none at newport.

downton’s have got the contract for the brewery at magor,i was in there yesterday and was told they are still taking on driver’s,all new kit and and not far from you.worth giving them a ring.

Was working for Downtons back in 2010, finished for a job with stobbies. that came to an end in nov!!!
Rang Downtons the other wk, and they say not taking on…you got to get to the right person with these contracts
each contract is looked after by a person and that person is never in, gone to a meetin, abducted by aliens… .
Thinkin maybe blown the bridge on that avenue? who knows…they not going to tell u that

avagojo:
thank you all for the replies…last job was with stobarts…out of bridgwater, tramping…they laid all the guys off in newport depot back in oct`ish
tried Downtons too…nothing there. Used to work for them too back a bit…good job too. Left for stobarts and looking back it was easier with Downtons than Stobarts…although stobart pay better
Seen autologic ad…but can i live in a low cab all week is the only sticking point…like the space
keep em coming.

That’s not something you hear very often!!!

Assume Downtons paid in coloured beads then!!!

Sorry I can’t help on this as you are a distance from me. Don’t think there’s much about anywhere TBH. Best of luck with your hunt. :sunglasses:

Downtons pay in monkey nuts… £8 p/h flat rate right through…or did
Stobarts less on the hour but with £13 a day food allowance, and £5 a day fuel bonus… it all becomes a bit more palatable. Just you have to work all the hours with stobbies to make a wage out of it…same old same old eh?
thanks for your support and all the best too

Culina are looking, as are Hicks in Caldicot (John?)

Thought you would be spoilt for choice where you live, been there long ?

Bout 13 yrs all told…fitter by trade, on the plant hire …that trade died when the recession hit (as did the wages)
been driving from 06 on and off along side my fitting work…juggling two careers…more driving now though.
the money is about the same for both now, and i know id rather be indoors looking out , than out there looking in when its monsoon weather in the u.k...which is more and more these days!!! Have seen both ads for Cullina and Hicks.. Hicks logistics is like trying to get an audience with the pope!!! you have been entered, and will b contacted if you get through to next round`…no straight answers no more?
Cullina…you have to register on their site, create a profile, and log a CV… :open_mouth: only want to drive a truck, not a computer…but hey.
For every job there must be 100-150 going for it…all undercutting each other for the position.
the agencies promise you work…advertise each others work…just to get you in and signed up, so that he or she has managed to justify and keep their job another day…phew…and once signed up…no work sorry.

If it’s casual work you’re after could do a lot worse than Wilko’s, Swift Newport.

I’d call in at Hicks Logistics, hear they’re on a run and often looking for drivers, casual and ft. I do at Brian Hicks if passing, always pleasant and must be worth it just to get your face known.

Come on lads cough up, must be something going around Avonmouth/Portbury ?

i was gonna ring or call into Brian Hicks…take it there aint no work there then? they seem a good firm to work for so say? Have to call into Hicks at Caldicot and see how it is…knew Terry from years back 95-96 period when he was a small company…prob not remember me now…but you never know eh? One way to find out…
Not wanting casual work really as my mortgage dictates otherwise!!!

Really don’t know m8, used to do the odd shift but it’s been a while and you know how things change…

If you want to go the whole hog what about Ralph Davies, anything doing Taff ?

Don’t think so at the minute but give him a ring you never know.

Have you tried Gerry jones?? TWT,or bridgetime in Cwmbran they was always looking for drivers, but be warned the pay ain’t the best.

Jones and TWT pay about the same, £7.50 ? maybe a bit less :unamused:

Might get a bit more out of Bridgetime.

Used to run for a shower out of Blackwood, I’d try TWT first

Avoid bridgetime like the plague
How far are you willing to travel?

Was travelling from Caldicot to Bridgwater (bout 3/4 hr each way, every week to stobbies) as a tramper, and prob same when at Downtons in Gloucester. So travel to work not a prob…unless you do it every day as a round trip…
was on nights at Downtons for a stint and boy did it hurt…£300-350 p/mth with fuel and bridge costs
kinda takes away the sound of £11 p/h as a good rate
