Any recovery truck drivers?

Hi all,

So I’m in early stages of gaining my license & the main thing I’m interested in is becoming a recovery driver for someone like Tears recovery.

Are there any recovery drivers on here? If so could I have some honest thoughts on the job? Love it, hate it, good & bad parts of the job etc?

Any comments welcome!

Kind regards,
Jordan

Hi

Sorry I have already posted an introduction thread, didn’t mean to come across rude

Very early stages, medical 16th Jan, I’ve been theory practicing for the past couple of weeks & am passing every Mock test so fingers crossed!

Regards,
Jordan

I had medical in march then they asked me to have eyes tested got provisional April done theory n hazzard july/august started 4day training Sept, failed twice and passed on 3rd attempt in November. So in my case about 8 months, passing practical is the hardest I thought, one tiny error and that’s it.you have to concentrate solidly for over an hour also U have to get reverse bang on. Don’t think its a walk in the park coz it ain’t.oh yeh.just passed cpc2 Dec 27. And now have to wait for CPC 4.it feels like its never ending and there’s no guarantee I’ll pass CPC 4.so if I stick my neck out id say have a spare year for completing this course. Hope im not putting you off, you may find it easier and I hope you do .all the best .

Hi,

Yeah I know the process & it’s no problem. I’m in a job and am in no rush to get driving straight away.

I’m just after a chat with someone who works in recovery.

Thanks

Hi
I work in recovery. If you want long hours and little pay do it, you will burn yourself out. The phone will ring all the time day and night. If you do local recoveries under 100km you will not use tacos so will running around like mad. But some love it. Sadly I am finishing at the end of the week.

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback.

Do you mind me asking if you work for a large firm, or is it just you & a truck?

I would for a medium size company, doing light recoveries up to 4tonnes. The clubs that we work for, which are major firms pay peanuts.

Hi,

I too am new here. I’m a12ton recovery driver for a large firm in Croydon. The company has contracts with AA, RAC, GreenFlag, Local Authority and police amongst others so it’s quite busy. We do 6 on and three off with each shift being 12hrs. The actual job is enjoyable and varied and members love it when you turn up because you are clearly their knight in shining armour. Trucks are new 62, 63 plates and all the 12 tonners have fully demountable bodies which makes it easy to load low sports cars.

Now for the bad bits. The control department is atrocious. They can give you a 3hr job 45mins before your shift is due to end so you rarely get to finish your shift on time. There’s no overtime paid. It’s just time in lieu. As a driver you also don’t get listened to. We are always banging on about the lack of equipment and no one cares. I’ve had to get my own sliders, jump packs etc just to make the job easier for myself. I take back my equipment after every shift. They also have a habit of sending you jobs that are beyond the capacity of your vehicle eg 6.5ton ambulances and securicor vans that are laden with safes. You have to be firm and refuse but you end up getting chastised by management anyway.

Up until last month the pay was 24k pa but it’s just gone up to 27k. If you ask me its still not enough because the hours you end up doing are ridiculous. You are not on tacho if you operate within a 62mile radius of your base so you can be worked proper hard sometimes. I’ve heard that a lot of recovery companies are like this but I stand corrected.

Wages in recovery are not that great across the board . If you can at least get a company that supplies you with all the kit you need and decent working hours then you are on to a good start. I’m thinking of doing my class 1 now and possibly find a decent specialist heavy recovery firm or find something else to do in the transport sector.

I applied for a job at edgertons driving the class 2 Monsters. Boy am I glad he never returned my call after reading this. I’m on tippers now and it’s great, local work and job and knock.
