Any pointers for driving in germany

hi,
my mum and step dad are going to germany for a week, at the end of november, the car will be mot’ed and serviced just before it goes so thats ok.
there catching the harwich-oostende, staying in holland for a couple of days, the going on to germany.

is there anything they should know, they lived in germany 20yrs ago (raf/army).

any help would be brilliant.

harwich-oostend ■■? dont you mean hook

I think you will find that the Harwich boat goes to The Hoek

Stuff for the car:

Warning triangle.

First aid kit (available from Halfords. They do 2 sizes. It’s the bigger one they want. It states that it is approved for use in Germany on the box).

Hi Viz vests not yet compulsory but recommended in case of breakdown.

GB sticker if not incorporated into licence plate.

Car registration document.

Depending on where they are going, they may have to obtain an environmental badge (details HERE)
which is affixed to the car windscreen. It can be obtained for 5€ at any TÜV station in Germany upon presentation of vehicle documents. Takes about 5 minutes and they do it on the spot.

That’s all I can think of at the moment. Hope this helps

the ferry, don’t ask, :unamused:

thanks for the information. i’ll pass it on dunno if it’ll need the emmisions sticker though,

first aid kit is sorted,

hivis got a load somewhere, triangle need to get one

GB sticker ditto

the v5 documents needs to go with them, what about the mot certificate?

good job they ain’t going tommorrow.

once again thanks for the information

I would take all documents for car, including insurance and mot. Take originals not copies. Also driving licence.

I would also make sure to have european breakdown cover including getting home.

Tell them not to run out of petrol on the autobahns as i believe you can get fined for this apparently.

spare bulbs, saves paying a fine,
here are the BFBS radio Freq
and the area where one hears
the stationsBFBS-FREQ Just scroll down to Germany
there are two stations

Be aware if there is a accident or Traffic
jam leave a distance between you and the car in front
also they will have their 4-way flashers going to warn the
vehicle behind,

Make sure that the Tyres are winter approved as non compliance
can cost you money and also have the antifreeze in the radiator
checked -30, this goes for the window-screen bottle as well.

Just a small thing and if they have lived in germany they will probably know already.
The motorway exits are a LOT sharper than english ones

Bloody right! :grimacing:

also myself not sure thats you may need a fire extinguisher for your car?

If they are travelling in a city that requires the environmental badge sticker, then just locate the main dealer of the car they are driving in any town in Germany, it takes about 10 minutes to have it done and costs 5 euro, they will advise what colour it needs and where that allows the car to go.

Drive on the Right :stuck_out_tongue:
