Even later than late
Funny how I’ve never seen this, I started as an apprentice fitter at Barbers in 1972 after ā€˜lodestar’ who were AEC agents closed. Roy Barber visited one day, I was asked if I wanted a job and that was that. At the time they had a small yard and garage on Church Street in Oughtibridge. Served rest of my apprenticeship there which then was 5 years. Left at 20 to work for Hallam Commercials who were Volvo dealers and was ā€˜poached’ back when Barbers bought Volvos. Eventually built a new garage on Jawbone Hill. Many happy memories and learnt a lot working for a proper haulage company. Pity, not a single picture. Proctors were owned by barbers and had the same livery, they were based at Brinsworth, also owned part of RDB (Riley, Dale and Barber) who were based behind the bingo on Mansfield Road at Birley. Seem to remember they had depots at somewhere like Luton and in Rutherglen in Scotland. They sold up in the end and their yard is a housing estate now. Strange how I’d not heard them mentioned for years as they became the largest haulage firm in the North and John Barber became Chairman of somewhere like the RHA. A couple of years ago I visited Sheffield Tachograph Centre at Rotherham and discovered the owner was Ian Barber, one of the sons who served his apprenticeship in the garage. Serviced ā€˜311’ in the pic many times and saw them run, Leylands, AEC’s a Foden, Volvos, Scanias, you name it. I’ll shut up now ha. Eventually got sick of the way fitters got talked to just because we got mucky and became a driver. If ONLY I’d known!!!

Great bit of info there Billy i think a lot of old threads on here will be resurrected with people having so much time on their hands at the moment they will be trawling back through the pages on Trucknet.

The Ergomatic Leyland Beaver crash in Manchester would have been three years before you started at Barbers.

Here’s one of their Leyland Freighter’s from 1984.

Long time ago but seem to remember that 311 was used as a yard motor. Probably because of this collision. I recall having some affection for it compared to some. That would most likely be due to me being able to drive it. Times sure change. I learnt how to drive artics and was encouraged to do so without any restriction. Changing up and down box as quick as I could before the end of the yard and then reversing all the way back for another go. Being an AEC made this one easy. They had 32 speed Foden which was a right pig and a 16 speed Guy with a ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  which was a one change motor to a novice like me. Motors nowadays don’t need driving like they did. Double clutching, Eaton 2 speeds, recovering motors with no clutch, changing gear by the sound of the engine. Don’t know they’re born nowadays. Wonder how many would sleep on a board across the engine cowl. Ha ha not me

I am looking for any pictures of Barber Road Services motors from Oughtibridge, I believe they also ran some vehicles as Dunstan Valley Transport.
My old Scammell Roadtrain (C135FKH) went there before being scrapped at Birdwell.
I have some pics of it in the scrapyard but wanted some of better days.

I’d be interested in any information, stories etc from drivers or employees. I will add the photos I have when I can get them scanned.

Hi Steve,I remember Barber Road Services well being a ā€œdee-dahā€ but no pictures I’m afraid.Proctors in Rotherham were in the same colours later on I think.
Looking forward to the photos. :sunglasses:

Here are some pics of C135FKH when I had it:

These are the pictures from Birdwell scrapyard:

The vehicle then had been owned by Barbers and was running under Dunstan Valley Transport,
one of Barber’s other Roadtrains can be seen next to it.
