Any one remember samuel williams dagenham docks

A pair of new Atkinson ‘Silver Knight’ Mk.2 tractors:

Hi

Here are a couple of photos of lorries that my dad, Ron Pickman, drove when he worked for Samuel Williams. Hopefully more to follow.

Hi

Wasn’t happy with the last photo so have resubmitted. Sorry.

This photo was sent to me by Brian who used to work for Samuel Williams with the quote below

“This pic was taken just inside of Sammy’s gate,I was going in and Jimmy Macauliffe was coming out in a Leyland Comet, with a Scammel trailer loaded with steel. The trailer came off and instead of going down on it’s knees, kept coming, right through my cab, missed me by an inch or two, I was lucky not to have lost a leg or something.”

Hi

Attached below is the photo of the repaired ERF I posted last time. Notice the split windowscreen after the repairs.

Hiya that split screen was a result of a work to rule at Pilkintons in IICR 1968. ERF coul’nt get windscreens so the two piece screen was fitted.
I don’nt remember who supplied them.At that time ERF must of had 30 trucks waiting for screens and they was parked up with plastic covering the cabs
to keep them clean and dry.Anyone who could fit a screen worked all weekend when the screens was delivered.A one piece screen was a replacment for
free but many costomers stayed with the split screen untill a screen got smashed.

Photos from Sammy Williams when they started the TIR work.

Thats a cracking picture of the LB76,
That was almost certainly supplied new from B&W motors Wolverhampton, there was quite a lot of work converting them to petrol regs spec, with front mounted exhaust ,double pole wiring, rear cab fire screen and strenghtened rear glass. Many had to be chopped from 6x2 to 4x2 when they came in the country as 4x2’s were in short supply , not sure if that was one but that was carried out as they came into the dealers.
Many had to have 3 line air sussies fitted, to comply with UK regs as they used 2 line abroad, of course now we have adapted to their 2line system  The 76 was a good reliable motor well ahead of its time.

Hi feltfixer: I’m sure I speak for everyone else when I ask…can you re-post these pic at a MUCH LARGER size please? They look superb!

Got these 2 photos from a friend who worked for Asian Transport (Astran). He took them in 1970 as he was returning through Eastern Turkey from Iran. Sammy Williams boys ( XYW 347H ) were having trouble with brakes. Sorry the pics are so dark. Wonder if anyone can make out the Williams driver in second pic?

Anyone know any Mid East destinations that Williams went too?

One of sammys scania on TIR work driver Brian Smart who sent me this photo, will try and enlarge the smaller photos when i can work it out, i think the driver of the last photo is also brian because the number plates corrospond with an earlier photo but will let brian him self confirm that. thanks for the intrest.

Another photo of OJJ 97, a lorry that my dad used to drive and other photos of the fleet of Samuel Williams.

Saw the mention of jimmy macauliffe does anyone know his whereabouts today? Would love to hear from him or anyone who knows him
Bill

Bill,
I knew Jimmy when I was at Sammy’s,he was a mate at that time.I keep in touch with another Sammy’s driver and I think he knows where Jimmy is.I’ll get in touch with him and try to find out for you.If you’d like to e-mail,my address is bsmart65@shaw.ca rards,Sammyb2123

as far as i know jimmy is still at the same house in dagenham

Hullo,
The last time I saw Jimmy Mcauliffe he was working in the offices at Ferry Frieghting, with another one of Sammys’ drivers, probably the very first T.I.R Driver that they had, Billy Moore. The last time I heard of Jimmy was about six years ago and I understand he was doing Holland, and driving again. He used to drink in the Fiddlers ( that sounds just about right ), but I believe that it’s closed or been pulled down now. If anybody does see him please give him my best regards.
Cheers, Archie.

After the period at hmp, jimmy worked as tpt manager for bournebridge int,a company at ferry lane rainham doing the ferry freighting italian groupage.Bounebridge int was owned by brisca formula one stock car racer bobby burns.stuart booth the ex samuel williams and ferry freighting driver also worked for bobby

Hullo europleb,
Wow! what about that then ?, I never even knew he could sew. I never knew that he went on for Burnsy though, and I completely forgot about the Yorkshireman, Stuart Booth. ( does he still perm his hair in a Poodle Cut ? ) Good to see these people are still around.
Cheers, Archie

jimmy got taught to sew because of disney permits,he agreed to to put just his own neck on the block and got looked after, ffg could not be seen to re employ him so a tpt manager job was sorted out with the main contractor bobby burns.Bobby had a bad stroke in spain 15 yrs ago leaving no use in his right arm and very little movement in his right leg.HE still works 6 days a week car dealing and transporting and hes got more old bunny than ever.Hes still in touch with boothy who i believe moved on to a mullet hairstyle in the 90"s and prob still sportin it.Bobby ended up in the same boat as most other ffg hauliers running their asses off with not a lot to show profit wise, like eddy bell and after him my dad alan frost[ex samuel williams driver]so bob called it a day.Stuart finished his int work with Ralph Davies doing a bit of russia on a casual basis<currently he is doing bits of agency with tescos.
