Is it finished yet?Insight supplied materials for the building work.Is Andy Westlake, from Colomendy ltd, acting as their agent down in Gibraltar, still working or retired.Good bloke.
I flew out of there last thursday. It’s no where near finished, just concrete columns sticking up. I reckon it will be at least another 18 months yet. It looks much bigger than i was expecting but then they are up to about 10 flights a day now. There was no sign of the new road yet. I understand the truck route is going round the end of the runway and cars and pedestrians in a tunnel underneath. Other than that it was looking good down there, very busy.
Lot of pilots say Gib is hard to land, due to strong down winds.A Monarch was nearly written off,on a landing so hard,it had stress fractures from the under carriage up to the main fuesalge, bet the y fronts were browner that day.The tunnel that went all the way around Gib,was shut due to a father and son getting killed by falling rocks in their car,the route was turn left after the runway by the BP,end up by the Mosque that faces Africa. Will be good when it finishes. At one time British flights were banned over Spanish air space, political reasons,as they want the rock back.

they are trying to develope that area as a nice beach cleaned it up a lot but its used as a truck park by the local skip lorries.
that route takes you around to the posh expensive hotel where sir john mills used to live.
no idea who andy westlake is but there is a bloke on here called hombre lives in same town as me and he works for the uk company doing the transport for all the building stuff for the airport, insight logistics
Insight used to be called Phoenix and Keys transport when Steve was in Alcester, nice town by a river. They had a lady trucker called Kate, who died of cancer, drove a red ERF,she never knew she was ill, felt rough in Gib,then UK doctor said it was terminal.John had a carvavan in Steves yard, recall an Indian driver then.Long time ago now.Parking in Gib for HGVs was a problem,no room.Used to go in Royal Navy yard.Never had time to go diving.
I goto GIB on holiday once a year, adore Catalan bay to sunbathe and swim in.
Had a look at the wreck of the"fedra" down at Europa Point when we there in April, christ what a mess!!

have you seen the 3 yank tanks in the water below the cliffs at europa point? if the water is still you can see them at the bottom, they were pushed in when the war finished as they were cemented in and left as a defence against germans trying to land at europa point (which never happened) and when it came to move them it was more expensive to remove them and get them working that remove them and push them in the water.

Eastern beach, good for surfing just by where the skip wagons park up but be careful of the rip tide! And by the way there aren’t many German shepherds there now, just various air dogs for explosives and drugs with a couple of guard dogs but not all German shepherds. The barracks are devils tower camp and was mainly married quarters in there.

The tunnel is closed and wont be reopened, it was the one around the back (eastern side) of the rock from catalan bay to the incinerator at the rear of Europa. It wont be reopened because they reckon it will cost in excess of £5m to make safe and gib government does not have that sort of money, plus they are too corrupt to do it anyway.

Used to go in Royal Navy yard.
Did you used to do the road train from Portsmouth to gib? If you did you may have spoken to Danny, or Lesley in the shipping store? I used to work with them . When were you going in there? I went there in 2004 and left there in 2007
Never saw the tanks Gibsla,to be honest the sea was always choppy and bloody windy as well.I’ll have a look for them next time i go.
I was talking to a driver at our place who was stationed there with the army,he went back last year and was gobsmacked how dirty it was,he said the Army used to make sure Gib was always clean and used to look after many parts of the rock for the Government.
I don’t mind it though as i love watching the ships sailing through the Straits and into the bay, pity you dont see much of the Navy in the harbour now though.
was it possible that the mod had a submarine base under the rock itself.hence its important position between europe and africa/asia.i think there are many official secrets that we will never know about inside the rock structure.Listening posts, message interception etc,

that is impossible.

you might not know but i know a man who does
The septics run a listening post up on the top of the rock. You meet the guys based there around the rock socially, but they never wear uniform. If you go into the Lord Nelson pub in casemates square they have the maps of all the tunnels on the walls. I don’t think there is any secret sub base. Ii have been all around the rock by boat and did my diving licence there, but never heard of it. Doesn’t strike me as being dirty, yes there are a few tatty old blocks of flats but also now some very expensive new ones. Have a look at the new Ocean Village development or the Kings Bastion leisure centre. Fantastic, and if the goverment is corrupt (which i doubt ) then we could do with the same in the uk.
Late 90`s the Spanish customs would break EU law on random searches on exiting vehicles from Gib,they stopped everything going out.Whenvever political tension was high, they would get a bee in their bonnets and make life hard. Was funny to see the old grannies on the border that would ask you to bring ciggies over.Sugar was also smuggled to Spain, and used to see young jids in flash sports car, they earnt from speed boat smuggling ops.Did hear Guarda civil clamped down, with helicopter patrols and machine gun raids.
That was under the old spanish goverment who were the party of General Franco. The spanish foreign minister visted gib yesterday, the first time that a member of the spanish goverment has ever visited. If you search for the Gibraltar Chronicle on google you can keep up with what goes on down there. The old days when the guardia use to chase the speedboats with helicopters are over now but it’s still illegal to own or take a rigid inflatable boat with an engine over a certain size into gib waters. I remember the days you are talking about it was like something out of Apocalypse Now.
