Any decent operators left

tango boy:
Give ya that one, if it’s a dead mans shoes job why are they using agency then■■?

Because on nights the demand fluctuates a fair bit. Monday there’s not a great deal as they have a lot of their own drivers on night out, Friday there’s loads because of how many have Friday off to have a long weekend then there’s the fluctuation of sales. Period 11 in October will see them hiring in a load of units and trailers because of the sheer demand.

Its also a good way to make sure you get decent drivers when you employ one. They pretty much exclusively employ agency drivers. Typically you do 2 to 3 years with them and then when a vacancy comes up it gets offered to whoever is next in line but who is next in line is done from a combination of time served, vehicle damage, fuel economy, Microlise scores etc.

Sick of working for monkeys. Just needed to say that lol.

Howdens Joinery. Good luck getting a job there though. Dead mans shoes like all good firms are. Interesting point to note is from my experience the best operators tend to be those who run lorries but aren’t in haulage, i.e like Howdens they’re a manufacturer who run their own trucks to deliver stuff they make. When you have to make money out of your trucks the maintenance can get scrimped on and drivers pushed to make runs

From what I hear, the best way into Howdens is through the agency. Last October when I was looking for work I saw them advertising through an agency (but I wasn’t aware of their apparent prestige back then).

I heard from a workmate who has a mate working there that nights is 50 hours average for £43k per year. Apparently they’re the best payers in Northampton.

Emersons out Coalville way have a good reputation…behind me in the queue please…just waiting for one of their drivers to mess up

Averaged 56hr week plus there’s a bonus scheme which usually works out around £1500-£2k that you can take as part cash or part/full payment towards an event or something you want to do, a good pension, rewards for length of service - 25 years gets you a free kitchen and £500 vouchers which is worth around £4-£5k in total. They also do a lot of social activities - the weekend before Xmas when I was working I came back one morning and there were staff there decorating the canteens out for a Xmas party for the staff kids. They also have social events during the summer.

I think its £41k in Howden but you can imagine how far that goes in East Yorkshire. There’s people like solicitors wishing they earned that up here.

Careful. There are some sensitive souls on here, don’t you know

Are there any decent operator’s left?

Yes. Mine.

Lol. Sensitive souls. You are not wrong F-reds!

Im also constantly checking my hi-viz isn’t ’ inside out ’ too.

I saw paramedics giving cpr to a full time driver working for a large company after he was asked to swap runs with an àgency driver today,it was the thought of doing a real days work caused him the heart attack !

Nah…it was the three hours of hard graft to get his cab clean, after an agency had used it the previous night that caused that.

What is a decent operator? To some one that specs top notch trucks and pays for you to go to truck fest may be decent despite been expected to spend three or four hours on Friday afternoon or come in Saturday to wash the lorry may be decent.
To others may be high wages others maybe not great wages but a easy job with short hours.
Generaly I’d say the all round better jobs will be more specialised jobs or own account jobs.

Just one where they give you what they say. Not after flashy motor but would like tramping. When offered general haulage and end up on store work or promised a decent finish and end up 14 hours and 1900 finish on home day is in my opinion crap but that’s my opinion and I know everyone has their own opinion
