Any advice - D4 Medical issue

Hi All,

I’m new to the forum and in all honesty I’ve initially joined for some advice.

I obtained my licences (A, B, B+E, C and C+E) whilst serving in HM Forces and have recently been discharged. Here I am now a month away from the ripe old age of 45 and the inevitable LGV medical is just around the corner.

Due to injuries sustained whilst serving I am on some VERY strong medication, the strongest being Fentanyl, 137 mg (transdermal patches).

Physically, I have no problems driving, my injuries have had no major impact in that respect and I drive a car daily to work. However, I have had no need to drive any LGV’s for some considerable time. That aside, I would still like to retain my LGV licence, even though I do not need it in my new career. (you never know what’s around the corner)

Although I am on such strong medication, it has had NO detrimental effect on my concentration or my judgment when it comes to driving. I have been on the strength of medication that I am presently on for over two years without any problems. My Specialist and my GP are both willing to state in writing the very same.

My concerns are that if I go ahead with my medical the DVLA will see the fentanyl (and other similar medication) on my submitted D4 and revoke my LGV licence (and possibly my Cat B)

Has anyone been through similar? Any help or advice would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

may i suggest that you take the D4 form to your GP and pay him to fill it in ( ask how much it will cost ) as there may be cheaper but at least dvla will be less likely to question your own GP

this is my own experience from dealing with DVLA & medical

just because you are on medication doesnt mean that you will lose your licence ( as there are several ppl on here who have health probs myself inc ) have you seen the guy who only has 1 arm ■■ there is also apparently a guy who drives containers with a false leg

It’s worth pointing out that if you don’t renew at 45 you won’t lose the entitlement, you could let it lapse and if you do need the HGV later take the medical then.

Thank you EVERYONE for your replies. mrpj, yours is of particular interest, I wasn’t aware this?

So in short, I could take my LGV medical several months (years?) after the required date but still be able to get my LGV Licence back?

How would this be processed with DVLA? If this is a legit and recoginised procedure there should be a form obtainable from the DVLA?

Any further help appreciated.

YES - some have done this after a 10+ year break

The DVLA remove the entitlement and will notify you of this - no form required.

Thank you for the very quick reply, especially about the 10 + year break - Can you point me to the exact source of your information?

Thank you.

There are other posts on this site that also confirm this is correct but I am unable to find such info on any official site - just one of those things that is not put on the .gov.uk sites but is probably written into law somewhere - I’m no good at finding that sort of thing quickly, if at all

A thread from this site from one who had a 10 year lapse - Licence lapsed

Fantastic, you’re a star, reading that has made me a much happier man. Although I probably wont use my LGV Licence again, you NEVER know what the future holds and it’s always a handy thing to have.

Thank you.

WARNING
It is not only a medical that you may need to drive LGVs COMMERCIALLY if you leave it for after 09/09/2014 - you will also need the 35 hours of THE PERIODIC (ongoing) DRIVER CPC before you can turn a wheel !!!

You will not need this to drive a LGV privately.

Thanks for the warning, fortunately I knew about that one.
