Antique engine fell from trailer

The owners of a rare antique steam engine could face a £100,000 repair bill after the machine slipped off the back of a lorry and was badly damaged.

The 21-tonne Fowler engine, named the ‘Giant Panther’, which was made in 1917, missed an electric pylon by inches after falling off the low loader as it went around a blind bend.

The ploughing engine’s flywheel, boiler and steering mechanism were damaged in the accident in Crays Hill, Billericay, Essex.

:frowning: ■■■■ that’s a shame

The owners won’t be facing the repair bill unless it was being towed on their own trailer without insurance, and in any event I would only put the write-off value of a 1916 Fowler traction engine at £100,000 maximum.

More of the story here

I hope that they can get her restored to working order,I would have thought that it would have been safer to transport the engine cold and dry rather than in steam.

Looking at the wheels was it steel on steel ? A bit conveyor belting needed I think.

Just fortunate that it was an old one eh…

Pete.

It is no accident. The steam engine driver is waiting for his paperwork since unloading at a Rdc since 1917.
They did say it will be a long wait Drive.

“The weight will stop it from moving!”

will the insurance company replace new for old…■■
joking aside, no one hurt and it will fix…
now, how do you work this one out on the vosa matrix ■■

Doesnt look too bad, the sumps missing, and the 2 front wheels cos you can still see the brake shoes, bolt the chimney back on, and replace the n/s mirror…and maybe next time either call the professionals, or ask VOSA how many straps should you use.

I do wonder if there was a reluctance to over-tension or attach too may chains for fear of them causing damage.

With reference the load security matrix, despite the obsession with curtainsiders and their ‘just weather protection’ very few of these shed loads, that get posted, seem to have come off curtainsiders.
