Another up coming driver on his way

hello my names mike , im turning 21 in April so perfect time to change paths and do something better to what i doing now and something to which i will enjoy(hopefully :sunglasses: ).
so ive started my journey, had my medical yesterday 22 march just waiting for my licence to come back then i can book free assessment
plus im on a 18 hour a week contract with sainsburys in store warehouse so in frequent contact with a load of drivers (including the miserable ones  ), so im in two minds either to quit job once i found job and done all training or just do driving as well as working at sainsburys.

any advice or anything else im open to it all

Mike

Hi Mike,

Welcome to Truck Net! I’m sure there will be some more experienced and wiser heads along soon enough to give you some decent advice but I would say, stick with the 18 hour job as-well for now. Not sure how you would work it round the driving but I’m sure you can start to put it all into place as you get closer to getting your licences back.

Have a good look around the forums, there’s so much information for us newbies to read and digest and if you need any more info or are unsure on anything, ask away!

On a side note, I’m guessing that as you’ve only just done medical, you haven’t done theory tests yet? If not, then consider doing your module 2 at the same time as the theory and HPT. You don’t have to but it would mean all them three are done and dusted…

alright there dan,
thanks for the reply, didnt know that you could do module 2 with with theory and no haven’t taken it just yet, the place where im training said after pracical book both modules but hey if you can do one with theory im gonna then , as to driving there is a certain amount of hours you can do one week then to the other week isnt there?? (one driver said a while a go)

Hi Mike, good luck with it all. As Dan said have a good look around the forum it’s full of loads of info. Yeah in 2 consecutive weeks you can only drive 90 hours.

HI Mike

I ain’t gonna knock you for being keen and eager but you’ll probably find that age might go against you when looking for work, companies prefer ppl over 25… its and insurance thing…

Hi mike

I passed last year when I was 21 ( both c and ce), I did get a good paying job through a family friend but I got offered another job I applied for too. Don’t let 25 and 2 year experience scare you off if your willing to go looking for work not just ring people and surf the web. Showing up at someone’s doorstep shows your keen and hungry for it which is half the battle sometimes.

Some points I’d say are don’t wait to do your CPc modules get them out the way!

There’s an awful lot to take in regarding theory. Take particular note of your driving hours modules as it can take some getting your head round ( certainly when you introduce WTD)

Avoid brokers. I made this fatal misguided mistake with my cat c. Then I wanted to book my ce direct with my training company and as I’m a broker customer they wouldn’t as it violated their contract so had to go with the broker again to get the same trainer. I was infuriated to say the least. One good question is to ask what makes trucks they use, when booking my ce the idiot on the phone still was insisting they were a training school!!!

Invest in a truckers atlas, especially if your new to the road network. Don’t rely on a sat nav as they can really land you in the ■■■■ at the worst times. If you learn the roads and there’s a closure you can plan an alternative where a sat nav won’t. I also found investing in Philips street maps for areas you work in a lot. I’m not saying don’t use a sat nav but don’t depend on it.

Invest in a decent pair of boots

There’s just a bit of advice not gospel by any means but things I’d tell myself if I had to do it again, I started with very little knowledge of the industry or where I was going, and now a year into it I feel I command a good working knowledge but still learning every day

If you want any advise from someone who’s recently been through the process then feel free to pm me and I’ll help as best I can
