Another liquidation story... + first 3 months at class 1

Well, since I found it on RoadTransport.com this evening, I guess it is officially not a secret anymore. Another one bites the dust, just happens to be the one I was working for this time… :frowning:

roadtransport.com/Articles/2 … -owing.htm

Despite how that may appear (big numbers etc) I haven’t a bad word to say about the place, it’s been a very positive introduction, both from the other drivers who helped me out a lot to start with, and the friendly approach from the office. I think it was just a build up of a bad set of circumstances. It’s getting harder for the little fish to play amongst the big boys.

Most importantly, they were willing to give me a start when 30+ others were not. I only phoned them initially on the off chance, just by searching for local firms online, and that opened the door. I’ve done my best to make sure they didn’t regret that decision, think i’ve pulled it off for the most part. I wasn’t aware there were any problems until the day they called us all round to tell us we hadn’t a job any longer. Arguably I have come off rather well, as alluded to in that article, a nearby place offered to take the driver’s on. So i’ve gone from a casual verbal contract to a full time one.

It’s still early days for me, though i’ve had my licence since 07, this is my first proper go at the bendy ones and i’m just shy of 4 months in. A few pics of what i’ve been up to…

My view first thing every morning, dark now of course, but this was June. The superspace was the truck I was lucky enough to use the most.

Did two weeks for TNT on nights, a few weeks after I started. Got my reversing sorted out pretty sharpish  . These particular bays in Swindon were some of the tightest. Offside was normally empty though, which helped, a lot.

Lots of time at Tilbury (thanks for the advice from some on here about how to go about it).

Fair few traffic cones around the place, above is River Road Industrial Estate in Barking.

The strange end of the country, where the people are… entertaining to say the least. I found Norfolk to be the most relaxed end of the country to drive around.

Broken down last week just south of J29 M1. DafAid came to the rescue and got me going again. Small fragments of the inside of the fuel filter housing had snapped off and fallen down to block the lines. Two thumbs up to Dafaid, who impressed me more than any other breakdown service i’ve ever used both for speed of arriving and knowing how to sort it out. Also impressed with the design of the XF, which puts the fuel filter on top of the engine, rather than underneath it, like certain Iveco’s i’ve had the misfortune to fight with.

On days for the moment, so no tramping as the unit is double shifted. I seem to live mostly on the A34, take thy litter home with you, and don’t pee in my layby’s. :stuck_out_tongue:

Hope that was of some vague interest.

You don’t seem to have much luck with your driving jobs WG, but looks like you got lucky this time and have been taken on by Verran’s.

Another one bites the dust  Luckily for the drivers somebody else has picked up the pieces, in your case Goosey, it’s worked in your favour, I presume the bosses spoke to each other, so you must’ve made a good impression in your brief stint on the artics, that’s a nice confidence booster for you

I’ve tipped a few boxes at Verrans place, or somewhere a lot of their trailers were anyway, it was in Oxfordshire somewhere, but where I couldn’t tell you, I think it was Corned Beef I took up there, not really sure as I was too busy sleeping to watch the unloading process :sunglasses: there was a pretty decent burger van on the estate, I remember that

was expecting them to pull back up to strength as i was suprised a year or so when a family friend worked there and sent walking

dont start celebrating just yet,i thought a couple of years ago when stobarts took over innovate id hit the JACKPOT,things could only get better, now i feel like the bloke whos just lost the lottery ticket worth 20 million :frowning: :frowning:

Same as me Rob, I’ve finished a few off

I delivered to your place a few times and the guys always seemed top notch, Good luck to all of you.
I’ve just been in a similiar boat as yourself, the company i worked for went into liquidation with 1.7m worth of debt! lucky enough we were brought out by an irish company and i still have a job at the same company (all be it under a different name). There is light at the end of the tunnel mate just stick it out and your be alright

i recognise those bays in Swindon. They`re at TYCO unless im mistaken.they are tight.ive seen a few knocks whilst ive been waiting.luckily i normally had to back into the yard opposite.that was easy

R.D …that TYCO in swindon is that the old woolworths depot.
John

Yup, that is TYCO, it’s an ancient building, so could have been god knows what before. Would like to meet the guy who thought out the loading bays

I had a nightmare finding it the first time (including going to the wrong TYCO place, they didn’t give me any addresses so I just put “TYCO Swindon” into google and went there, mistake  ) they have rejigged the housing estates/industrial estates access there since last time I was around that way. I was getting flustered and ended up reversing out of quite a few wrong turns. The guy at TYCO was top notch though, very patient and eventually talked me in on the the phone when I made my umteenth hash up.

Sure fire way to upset TNT is to deviate from the stated run time. They get very upset. I was nearly an hour late on my first day, they were not amused.

It was good experience for a couple of weeks, but it would drive me stir crazy running to the minute (THEIR minute) all the time. The owner driver’s who put up with it are far better men than I.

Thought I hadn’t seen FS about much, they used to do work for Pow Wow water coolers out of Hanborough and Kidlington. Another Oxon haulier gone…

Word on the grapevine is that powwow defected to Chris Hayter, before leaving them in a huge mess.

Although from what i’ve seen Chris Hayter has gone from some quite ancient trucks to some very nice modern tackle, in the short time i’ve been driving to see them around the place, so they must be doing something right.

I remember the old Woolworths depot…one of my first drops in an artic

Put it on the bay then bring the keys in…
Can’t do that
Why Not
Cos I can’t open the door to get out of the cab, there is a wagon on the next bay

Harry Monk keeps saying we aint seen nothing yet :unamused:

Seems like he is right as usual.

Logistics is the first death knell of the traditional haulage industry!
