Another job with amazing wages - £7.30 / hr

F-reds:
The stone firm on our Industrial Estate can’t find a class 2 driver/yardie. Its not a demanding job, don’t go too far, yes the truck is a heap, but they only wanted you from 0800-1600 and were going to pay 22k… zero replies to their advert!!!

I’m sure someone will correct me but isn’t that getting on for £10.50 per hour?

It doesn’t mention the words ‘heavy lifting involved’ by any chance does it? :open_mouth:

Pimpdaddy:

Roymondo:
My eldest earns significantly less than £22k, yet he is managing to buy his own place (new build, shared ownership scheme) and keeps up the payments on a shiny new VW Polo while still doing the stuff that young men of his age do.

I earn more than that & I can’t afford a house or a brand new car, your eldest must be really good with money

He gets that ability from his Mum, not me!

Harry Monk:
The point is, that this is what the job pays.

I could put another truck on the road and employ someone, but I don’t because I would only be able to pay a similar wage and I couldn’t be arsed to deal with posts on TruckNet about how crap my wages were. In the scenario above, the wage works out to about £90 a day, which is bang-on average in my area for driving a truck.

Where I work we are paid a flat 40 hours before overtime is paid so if we work 10 hours a day Monday to Thursday then Friday is all overtime. Last Friday I did a 15 hour day for which we get half an hour stopped for break. My wages for the day worked out as 14.5 hours @ £13.50/hour plus £10.00 early start money (We get an extra £10 if we start before 5am), so yes that works out at £205.75 for the day. That’s for driving an 18 tonne rigid on general haulage. Nobody wants to drive an 18 tonne rigid anymore, everyone wants to drive an artic but the trouble is that has helped to push down the pay rate for the job.

Got to say all these type of threads are getting boring now.

The way I look at it is this, my missus is a cleaner in a council run gym, she gets more than that.
She doesn’t need a digi-card, a hgv licence, a cpc.
In fact, all she does is clock in, do her hours and clock out.
She knows exactly what time she will start tomorrow and exactly what time she’ll finish.

She also gets full sick pay and final salary pension, Christmas saving scheme (money goes out of wages before tax and insurance and then is given back at xmas) and other stuff.

So, to expect someone to go through all we have to do, then drive on our roads with the maniacs - did you hear about the truck driver who was stabbed and then they stole his lorry? - for that money…

Also, if the topic bores you, why click on it, is the title not clear enough what’s going to be in the thread? :unamused:

NOBODY FORCES YOU TO DO THE JOB MOST LORRY DRIVERS ARE BROUGHT UP AROUND LORRYS THERE FATHERS WERE DRIVERS AND GRANDFATHERS WERE DRIVERS AND AS YOUNG LADS WHO FANCYED DOING THE JOB. WOW, you’re soo clever, thanks for writing it in caps for me, that makes it soo much clearerer :unamused:

1st, read my ■■■■■■■ post, I said that I CHOOSE to do this, never claimed anyone forced me to do it anywhere did I?

2nd, the wages are not what they are, if they were there’d be a LOT less drivers, FACT.

Sorry I didn’t write all my reply in caps, but then my caps wouldn’t have stood out, but if you struggle to read it I’ll convert it all to caps for you and put what is currently in caps in small case? :grimacing:

Where’s Dafman when you need him

If you think drivers rates are crap…

In fairness I think anywhere near minimum wage is an extremely degrading wage for a hgv driver when you consider the level of responsibility that we have.

Basic pay is the most important thing, overtime is extra. Harry is right in what he says… If he can’t afford to pay someone a decent wage, he won’t employ them. It’s a shame other companies don’t do the same. £7.30 per hr is a ■■■■ wage no matter what job you do.

You are the problem and people who think the same.

As above post. Drivers who’ll accept a crap wage not out of necessity, but the desire to “live the dream” of having a big cab covered in fairy lights. Take a low wage if the yard’s opposite your house, but doing it so you can drive an advert for All Ride accessories??

I have yet to figure out how the fairy lights take the stench of stale urine and litter from the laybys that will be drivers new homes, or how they make the back end of the trailer in front on congested motorways seem more appealing. :open_mouth:

Employers paying muppet wages will inevitably treat their staff like errrr… muppets…

Even double-manning the road up from Chile to Peru would have the mate on more than this. :stuck_out_tongue:

While I agree this is not enough for class 1 someone else will be happy to take it, until drivers stop taking low paid jobs pay will keep going down.
