Another ingenious way of parting motorists from their cash

dailymail.co.uk/news/article … nning.html

Heard this on the radio the other day and thought it was a wind up. Not surprised to hear some councils have already implemented it.

Just wondering how long it’ll be before MSAs have an “idle warden”, fining truckers trying to build their air up in a morning!

“Close to schools and hospitals”
when what they are actually saying is “We say this is why when we want to bring it in because no one can argue as its protecting children and sick people and that way it becomes common practise and after we’ve released a few statements of how great its making the air we can then slowly start sneeking it in and extending it to when parked anywhere and hopefully people wont notice”

Been around in Glasgow for a few years I think.

Getting rid of speed bumps too, can’t argue with that.

Nothing wrong with these proposals in my eyes, saves fuel, the environment and health.

Yip. I stay in Glasgow, although in the South Lanarkshire Council area, and quite recently the council made a visit to my daughters school near finishing time and dished out a few fines for this.
I’m also sure Glasgow council don’t just target schools and hospitals. They will issues fines anywhere the find people leaving their engines idling for no good reason.

The wardens are already “Idle” in that they wander around the truckstop park and do bugger all when some group of brudders with unliveried van, oil drum, stirrup pump (and spade?) decide to go around siphoning off the fuel of whoever just went for a ■■■■ in the actual gents rather than downside next truck’s wheels. :unamused:

Does this include…

Ice cream vans sitting there all day on tick-over?

No, they are all over 20 years old so will be exempt from any emissions regs… :unamused:

I am all in favour. Stupid truck and coach drivers sitting with their engines belching nasties for hours on end. Lock em up I say.

Anyway - I thought that most engines cut out after a couple of minutes.

I drove an ice cream van way back in the 60s. It had a propane powered engine to run the freezer and the ice cream machine.

So…

The most polluting and oldest engines are allowed to run all day.

You couldn’t make it up could you. :unamused:

It’s my pet hate, it’s june for chuff’s sake, it’s not roasting hot so you need the air con running. It’s not so cold you’ll freeze to death in the 15 minutes you’re parked up outside school so why do you need your engine running anyway in your 15 plate mercedes?

Michael Mouse MOTs then I guess. :unamused:

Because it doesn’t actually achieve very much at all. The real reasons for the pollution is too many people in the same place. And the reason it is bad around schools at school run time is because of the amount of sheer bone idle parents and kids. Most are within walking distance of school.

Where I live air pollution is a non-issue. Why? Because we have a population 1/60th the size of London living in an area almost twice as big as it is.

Tractor unit parks is where idling should be banned. The amount of attendants at our gaff who idle their engines the whole way through their vehicle checks is a joke. Bending down to check your tyres which are right next to the exhaust. Yep, that sounds like a great idea :unamused:

Fines for idling are not new. They have been doing that for some years now

Better to achieve not very much than nothing though.

why would you leave your engine running anyway what with the cost of petrol/diesel nowadays.

because they dont have to pay for it !!

We had a brilliant new manager arrive at our place…and put his great ideas to the test: When coupling up a trailer…reverse up to the pin…switch off engine…connect airlines…restart engine…and connect trailer…switch off engine…put safety catch on /number plate…wind up the legs…take off trailer brake…start engine…pull forward…switch off engine…close trailer doors…may be saving fuel, but puts more wear and tear on the starter.
