don’t give up hope with them. the company im placed with at the moment I was told when I first applied for a role there that the customer didn’t accept new passes. second time round I got a call back with in 5 mins could I get round there for 1pm for my induction and to fill in the paperwork. Mind you I had to argue with the agency to begin with.
try pawson transport at rotherham, there always looking for drivers and have been known too take on newly qualified drivers
Try driving round your local area during the day and look for yards that have an unattended lorry in the yard. Take your cv or business card and knock on the door. It only takes a bit of luck to get your first start, and the harder you work, the luckier you’ll get.
That ^^^^^ every time. Call in person, you’ll be surprised just how many loads aren’t covered and there happens to be a spare motor sat waiting.
Mallinsons and Truswells at Barnsley?

Means nowt. Our place does because they’re going in for MOT or are VOR waiting on a part.

They park their units outside your agency’s office awaiting MOT?
It’s worth going around the nearest companies and knocking on doors, honestly. Also, sit on a road junction and take the names off the trucks passing. Some will have addresses and phone numbers on them so give them a call if they are close enough, you never know.
How far are you from the Stockyard? Go and have a look there. Write down numbers, talk to drivers etc
Just keep slogging. Talk to other drivers and please don’t give up.
Have you thought of shunting? There’s normally jobs like that through agencies and at least it’s experience
Someone mentioned Wincanton on the other thread. They do start new drivers and if you get work on the concrete mixers (class 2) they pay you for the licence you hold, so class 1. Have a look at their web site
BTW if an agency EVER offers you money do not say no
The slimey, robbing, bent, lying bas***ds never pay for something they don’t need to
Re Cement mixer work, had a tip at Tankersley earlier.
Drove past Haslams yard, must be 30 mixers in there at least. I know nothing about them, but it might be worth a call? Quite a few high sleepers, so might be away all week on sites with them?
You have to understand what a dog eats dog profession this haulage came is. You can tell when the agency bod is lying to you. ( his mouth will move). Get some business cards printed up (Vistaprint) is one firm though I have noticed printing machines in railway stations Leave a card at any lorry firm near you . Frequent the butty vans on industrial estates try to get the local gossip, drivers are a shower of old fish wives , don’t tell them I said so.
A short notice shift is no way for a new pass to start. In my experience when the call from the agency is along the lines of “can you be there an hour ago”, it never ends well anyway.
Apart from anything else by implication the client already knows you were sitting at home and were desperate enough to take the shift. That is the starting point of their impression of you.

Ok, but it could be the only way for a newbie to get his feet on the first rung of the ladder.
By the phone call’s very nature, it’s obvious they have tried everybody else to no avail, so they are desperate enough to give the new guy a shift just to cover the job.
I personally would tell them to go and ■■■■ themselves…, but that’s because I ain’t an inexperienced newbie.

It sounds like the o/p would have gotten a chance in the right circumstances. Nothing wrong with enthusiasm. It seems that they would accept a new pass but it wasn’t the right time, which was probably a communication problem between the client and the agency.
There’s a certain irony to this lads post, on another thread on here, there are, alledgedly, a shortage of some 50,000 LGV drivers…perhaps not in his area though…
I lied my way into my first driving job too with an agency.
Said I worked for my dad driving his artic but things are quiet on the western front so I’m looking for other work to tide me over. It got my my ‘big break’.

Might have eorked once upon a time, bit just a glance at the dates on his licence?
Check the hours logged on his tacho card?
Not only no job, but no chance as he has shown himself a liar.

Agencies are full of liars.
Google tipper companys in your area. Chap doors. If you can get on the tar roadwork then its good dough.
Plus added bonus you get to take the ■■■■■■■ home at night so no fuel costs. Also wee homers on weekends and more perks inclusive. Job and finish most of the time. Pulling a trailer puts you class 1 cat but theres not a lot of driving involved. Mostly hard graft but i can assure you its only a 40 hour week with more money than you can get from any other job out there. Get a pair of decent riggers too.
biggriffin:
Just tell em, you’ve got two years experience if you get asked again,…Also if your in the Wakefield triangle, go and try Gee’s in Wakefield…
And when they do a licence check and it says held for a month he will be ousted, and thought of as untrustworthy.
