The vast majority of cyclists killed in London lorry accidents are women, even though women make up the minority of London cyclists by a very long way.
In 2015, six cyclists have been killed on the capital’s streets – all six of them in collisions involving HGVs. Five of those killed have been women, prompting Edmund King, president of the AA to describe the collision which led to death of Claire Hitier-Abadie in February as bearing “all the hallmarks of a ‘typical’ London cycling death – a female cyclist killed by a tipper truck turning left”.
Political Correctness forbids the saying of the unsayable, so I won’t say it.
as an hgv driver myself I say ban all hgvs from London, period, that way tfl lose a huge revenue maker, con charge[cos that’s what it is]and we wont have to drive into the craphole they call London
Only new law needed is the most vulnerable road users have the right of way.
Works on holland .
Hit a cyclist , its yr fault . no questions
Shifts the mind set of drivers in their invincible tanks and the accident rate falls
Except of course the trams which can wallop anything in their path

What could possibly go wrong if/when that’s applied here.

Welly Bobby:
There is a new law come Sept this year to do with side guards for 3.5t to the max weight no matter what age the truck are. That 8 legger is fitted with them but sill a death
Welly.
That’s for London trucks but all new ones seem to have that “life saving equipment” (junk). Can you remove it all or is it part of the C and U regs once fitted? It’s box ticking FORS tat at its’ worst. It bumps up the tare weight, taking away yet more payload already lost by the Euro 6 rubbish.
Someone mentioned bonus schemes,; Yes it still goes on in various guises (2/4 tipper firms I’ve driven for pay bonuses), and also two of those also pay job and knock. No coincidence that my current and best job pays hourly, with no bonus of any kind (except a few notes with Her Majestys’ face on them
).
You are right .
Its the only option
Make drivers and operators responsible for the dangerous equipment they control / operate in an urban environment
A psychological shift is required to make trucks safe , as no amount of guards , mirrors or stickers can achieve this .

More like give cyclists absolute carte blanche to be even more suicidally stupid than they already are and then prosecute the innocent party.IE a truck doesn’t generally turn left over a cyclist without the cyclist entering the junction together with and at the nearside of the turning truck.
Whatever
Its still the drivers responsibility to ensure no one is on the blind side BEFORE he turns left
End of.
I’m not referring to today’s tragic events specifically, but it’s not always the drivers fault in collisions. Not that this will help their feelings after an accident. People often forget about the effects on the ‘nasty lorry driver’, who could have been diligently going about his business.
I’m a cyclist, and have been cut up many times by people turning left in front of me, more often cars, but still causing some rather enthusiastic braking! But more frequently I see people lining up on bikes alongside large vehicles at roundabouts, traffic lights, etc. Leaving me to wonder, when oh when oh WHEN will these people realise they have absolutely NO logical reason to be there.
Wait behind the rear corner of the vehicle, where you can be clearly seen by the driver, and give us all a sporting chance…

Yes thats a cracking idea. Give cyclists, who already have complete disregard for their own safety at an astonishing level, the freedom to do as they please on the road with impunity safe in the knowledge that it will never be their fault.
What could possibly go wrong?

And if I asked you to explain why cyclists are constantly resisting attempts to have them required to be tested before being allowed on the road and to show they are responsible and have a grasp of road safety and awareness your answer to that would be what exactly?

More like a psychological shift is required on the part of the cycling community to make them realise that just because theirs is the greenest form of transport, they dont own the flippin road.
Everyone needs to share the road and has a right to use it. Only cyclists think they have more right than others because their “doing their bit to save the planet”
SIAmon , One reason is we are trained to go down the blindside by councils painting daft ’ cycle lane ’ paint there
But its still the drivers responsibility to ensure no one is ther3 before turning left

Spoken like a man with common sense. A safe, sensible way of dealing with things. Form a queue, second one there waits behind first and so on. No one would be killed or injured and everyone could go about their day with no worries or problems.
But there are some (both drivers and cyclists alike) who simply HAVE to go first regardless of whether its safe or not. And THAT is whats causing the problems
Came very close to having one myself yesterday @02.30,i was driving on the elevated A40 just east of ladbrook grove and at the last moment my headlamps shone on a cyclist with no lights whatsoever deressed in dark clothing peddling like the clappers along the flyover.Had to evacuate my lane luckily there was nothing in lane two

I’m guessing that you do understand the impossibility of that in the case of cyclists trying to outrun/undertaking left turning trucks through junctions. In which case at best you’re asking drivers to compromise,by minimising, the required attention ahead and elsewhere on the approach and through the turn in order to compensate for the selfish suicidal actions of cyclists. In which even that best case scenario,of taking the thing through the approach and the turn solely on the nearside mirrors, isn’t guaranteed to work.
Snowman .
You can certainly ask
But , excepting this post , i dont respond to trolls .
Particularly ones of the tunnel vision , idiot variety
■■■■■■■■ to all this banning malarky. Nothing needs banning, certainly not in the long term. Besides, the one type of truck that would always be able to get exception permits would be the type thats doing the killing - tipper trucks going to construction sites. Also i’m apathetic to all this talk of education/high vis/helmets/extra mirrors/cameras etc. Non of it’s a long term solution.
If London wants to be a cycling city, it needs to pull it’s finger out and provide proper dutch-style cycling infrastructure to keep it’s cyclists safe & give everybody a fair chance of getting home everyday having not died or killed somebody. It’s about time TfL took some responsibility for all these deaths having enticed all these cyclists onto the roads. Whilst the whole truck vs bike debate goes round and round in circles, more & more cyclists keep dieing. No doubt it’ll keep happening until someone high profile/in office is victim, then the penny will drop.

The only conclusion can be that their zb lives are so boring and/or their re claim the streets mentality is so overwhelming as to not only want to end their own life but also attempt to wreck that of the innocent driver who takes them out.
In that environment it really is essential to maximise use of main beam lights even at the expense of on coming traffic.
Carryfast .
I never said it was easy . i said its drivers responsibility .
May i suggest you keep an eye on yr offside mirror too for the motorcyclist hammering down there too
And dont drive a DAF in any town/city
Rob22 . i agree
Its funny how goverment can find billions to build cross rail , despite london having the best travel infrastructure in the country already ( trains trams overground underground and buses , even a cable car ! )
But cant find the resources to keep its most socially and environmentally responsible citizens safe .

Which still leaves the fact that there just isn’t enough space to provide it all.Room for cyclists can only be obtained at the expense of less road space for motor traffic and TFL knows it.While the cyclists seem to be on a suicidal crusade to shift the balance in favour of their ‘green’ preference. When the fact is London is more reliant on the free movement of motor traffic than cyclists ( or for that matter horse drawn transport ).The difference is that the horse users have long since understood that unlike the Green crusaders.
