Do you know the driver personally? Idiot,■■■■■■ bit strong isn’t,t it all on the strength of a newspaper article. jog on.
well he cant be of sound mind to drive past a HUGE and FLASHING sign telling him he was overheight!
that said its also not rocket science to check your height, and have a glance at the height plate on the approach signs and the one on the bridge, and lets not forget the big yellow stripy panel, and the big yellow letters “LOW BRIDGE”…
There’s quite a few I can get under happily (without dropping the suspension) even though it triggers the flashing lights. No car following has ever made any effort to flash me or even particularly hung back from behind me.
To be honest they are mostly ones I knew I had been under with the trailer I was pulling before they installed the lights.
According to the other thread, the warning lights are not there at the moment due to road works or something. Not that the big sign on the bridge itself shouldn’t be enough…

didnt even see another thread ahh well, if the lights are not working, then i take the bit about the lights back, but come on… the big yellow letters and stripy bits on the bridge!!
maybe the trailer was incorrectly marked, maybe it had just been in for a service or something and the markings on the trailer had worn and it was replaced with the incorrect height?

It does make me wonder if they have ‘low bridge’ in big letters, would it perhaps not be a good idea to also have the bridge height in big letters too, instead of on a small round disc, often obstructed by other street furniture?
It won’t stop every driver whacking the bridge, but may bemuse people when they read in the local rag that the bridge height was also in big fluorescent letters on the bridge too.

Although i believe that its always the drivers responsibility, maybe its time that ALL hauliers measure the heights of their trailers, and affix heights on a sticker on each trailer, its no good having a height limit fixed in the cab if a company uses various height trailers. Its about time hauliers were made to have all their equipment re-checked and marked as appropriate. We all know limits can be changed by the units being of different sizes/wheels/tyres etc but i have never worked for a haulier who has a device for measuring but most of them have had standard height across their fleet so have never encounterd any problems, unless coming across an access where the bridge is a lot lower than standard, and then i will take appropriate action and avoid.
Theres a lot of reports lately of bridge bashing and in all cases its due to the driver not knowing his height, and not knowing if he can get under a bridge or not and merely crosses his fingers and hopes for the best.
