Anglo Greek

chazzer:
It’s about time Chinky got back on here again and shared his stories about the middle east and greece some of which I know would get censored by the moderator especially the one about the yugoslavian train journey and the guard. As to the Transcon, £4000 out of a breakers yard where its been sitting for 6 years, I would have thought half that would have more than enough.
chazzer

Hullo Charlie,
I think you are absolutely right there mate, that,s way over the top. I was under the impression that it was still with ■■■■■, as obviously you were. I withdraw my last remarks about it. maybe 400, ( there,s no Pound signs on this computer ). And yes it would be good to hear a bit more from Nev on here. Whoop! Whoop! he,s ■■■■■■ again.
Cheers, Archie.

The big ford and f88s and lb scanias seem to make big money even for rotten ones. I suppouse there are so few that wernt exported of broken up and theres a fair few people who want to restore these first generation of modern trucks that you can name your price if you have one.

I have serviced, painted and repaired that truck / trailer more times than i care to remember, both when i was M&C’s fitter and then when i started my own company Greyhound Commercials.

Whatever people have said about Brian Hog, i must say that he ALWAYS paid me fully and on time, although he would want the truck done and finished in super quick time !!

Most of his trailers i would have shotblasted and painted them yearly, new tilts every two years. The trucks would be done as and when, but then they were far less subject to getting covered in paint dripping from the trailer.

Steve.

Colonel:
Here you are Mac, one you will recognise fondly.

Hullo M & C Steve,
Good to see that you´ve got Ush to join this site, I´ve just seen him lurking at the bottom of the page M & C ntc, Welcome to the site Ush, Norman. A lot of years since I last saw you and that was in Greece. I believe that then you were driving for Mervyn´s brother.
Cheers, Archie.

That Greece job was simple, any bugger could do it, you only had to follow the paint trail from Felling to Piraeus

Hullo Wheelnut,
Funny you should say that, if ever you meet up with Eric Benford ( ex AMG subbie ) you ask him about following the paint. I met him in Ancona, Italy one trip. He needed somebody to hang onto after getting off the ferry in Patras. OK I said you just follow me, we´ll go from here to Corinth, have a Souvlaki and a Beer, then run to St.Nicks, to be ready for Jimmy the Runner in the morning. Well we´d only gone about 25 k´s when he flased and hooted for me to stop, I stopped and went back. He said is you Motor running alright because the exhaust does´nt half smell.
No the Motors fine, nothing wrong at all. When we got to Corinth and there was some lights to see things. Oh! Bloody Hell his beautiful light blue and white, White Road Commander was absolutely covered in tiny white pinhead dots of the very best White International Ships Paint, all over Windscreen, Grill, Cab, Lights, everywhere. We got some Diesel and gave the Screen and Lights a bit of a clean off, and carried on to St.Nicks. The next day WoW! you should have seen it, mind you I thought the mottled finish looked good. Of course he was´nt too chuffed, but he kept it that colour till he sold it I believe. So Malc, it may be a simple job to follow, but get too close at your own peril.
Cheers, Archie.

When they stopped the truck parking in St Nick’s Square and surrounds most ended up in the customs parking opposite Peters truck stop. If you were weekended their, many of the eastern block drivers would have little containers or plastic bottles under the trailers catching the paint before it dripped out onto the ground. You could then see them painting their trucks with it. talk about dedication, whilst the western drivers were on the bevy. Thinking about Peters Truck stop what about the ingenious idea he had of getting the drivers to pay for having his ceiling lined with pine boards, pay him to have your name painted on a piece of wood and nailed to the ceiling. By the amount of names on there he must have done well.
I much prefered St Nicks with the choice of Dennis Dans later to become Pannis, or Gregg’s when he had the Harbour Inn. You also had the choice to walk over the hill and down to the marina for a game of darts at the plum pudding bar. I wonder how many of you remember the two lady’s that tried to entice you into their bar on the way down the hill towards the marina one of them owned the bar and was always asking if you had seen Hoss, but he had warned us all not to tell her that he was in Pireaus as she was very jelous and why is another story.
When Nick Garlick came to my house whilst he was researching for his book he said that he had had an idea from the photo he had seen of the back of a tilt trailer on the wall of Peters Truck stop in Piraeus. that he would like to have something similar in his book only with all the names of drivers on it who were no longer with us. If he does’nt hurry up he will either need a bloody big sheet or very small writing. regards Jamie.

Apart from seeing the big queue at Gevgelija one morning where a river of Fellings Finest was running down the road across the customs area and the jugheads were running round like headless chickens. I cannot imagine the massive fine, probably £4 at least

My mate had told me about the tilt inside Peters “Truckstop” and was expecting a European style establishment and it came as a bit of a shock when I arrived when everything on the menu seemed to consist of ham or eggs, eggs or ham or plain eggs or just ham.

Maybe my memory is slightly clouded by the vision that was Karin the cat women, mad as a box of frogs :stuck_out_tongue:

Trawling back through some of the older posts I foind this so thought I would give it a small bump!! :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyone found any more pics or remembered any more tales from the Greek run??

hiya
i only did 2 trips to greece 1 for m&c the other for kenny ward i met a lad down in greece from the north east who ran for anglo greek can not remember his name he drove a small renault artic with a cab like the club of four any body remember him he loved a drink .the first trip i made i met the lad with the fiat van at ancona waiting for the ferry he took me to a great resturant ,they treat him like a member of the family .
re brian hogg i am sure he started in transport hauling fruit & veg out of essex to the markets and his nickname was shoulders.

Mothertrucker that would be Graham Soper from around the Middleboro area, he ran that little Renault for several years to Greece both on the ferry and overland for Anglo Greek.

hello chazzer thanks for that i saw him another time in dover doing customs about 3 month after that first meeting but never met him again

Hullo All,

Thats completely right Charlie, that little old 230 Renault of Grahams was a brill motor, 18.5 tons of International Marine Paint, 10 tons of Brian’s Groupage loaded on top at £50 per ton, overland in Winter. I was brilliant. I do know that Graham MacIver is still in contact with Graham, as I was speaking to Mac a few months ago and he mentioned it. I wonder where Glen Campbell and Ossie Macintosh are these days.
Cheers, Archie.

Hullo again Kev’
Thanks for the reply mate. I’m very sorry to hear about Stan, on of the Best, a real character. Still over the water eh ? fantastic. I still do weekends when I’m back in the UK, have to keep your hand in you know. The Lads, Nick is still in Italy, lives in Monza. He still drives although I’m not too sure what it is he does now. His life seems to be dominated by a Motor bike group and his Harley Davidson. I shall most likely see him sometime this coming Summer. Kev is still driving, he has just finnished a three year stint on Dawsons doing steel work, and has moved down to Bristol to another job he said, doing all UK work but with maybe a chance to get over the water again. Do try to get those photos on Kev, they should be really interesting, all that embassy work out to Tehran. ( p.s if there’s any work going in the summer on your job then give me the nod. )
Cheers, Archie.

Just found this one of the rear end of the trailer in Peters Truck stop. The tilt cover must have been away for repairs when this photo was taken . Regards Jamie.

Hullo Jamie,
I’ve often wondered what the inside of Peters’ Bar looked like, it was only opened a few weeks before the Customs moved to Keresini, and I stopped running there about the same time. Who is the guy sat on youf left ? his face looks familiar, I did wonder if it was Paul. I can see that it’s Steve sat in front of you.
Cheers, Archie
