chippy:
I suppose the question is who will these three clicks benefit if noticed at all?
I am sure you may have heard the phrase ’ Splash and dash’.
As explained before - the 3 ckicks is the minimum for someone else to notice - more needed if you fell the circumstances warrant it.
’ Splash and dash’ - never heard of it or seen it written in any driving book that I have read.
Rog . ‘Splash and dash’ is a term we use in advanced training.
The definition . Driving along a M/way or D/C drivers will often click 3 times or less then change lanes. This is deemed dangerous as the signal may not have been reconised by following traffic or those in front. So the minimum clicks before a lane change ( if a signal is required) is from 5 minimum to whatever… There fore a ‘Splash and Dash’ You may have your own phrase for this.

I was taught not to use indicators to pass parked cars on my training.
The only time we were told to use them, is if you have to come to a stop before the parked vehicle because the road ahead is blocked by oncoming vehicles. By giving a signal to pass, other cars will realise you are waiting to move and not just stopped, thus not attempting to pass.
I personally feel, any signal to overtake a parked car, when there is no need to stop, is unecessary, and in fact, it annoys me when other road users do it that I am following, as it doesn’t give any clear idea as to what they are doing.
There is nowhere else to go but round the car, so why indicate?
The 3 clicks thing above, sounds like nonsense to me personally, but there are clearly people more in that know than myself.

I will not indicate to ovetake parked vehicles unless I think it will benefit another road user - especially the driver who is too close behind me and not paying that much attention. - plenty of approach indication for that one

Ah Wildgoose I agree I have been holding back a little to see what come up. So the splash and dash may not be necessary. But like all driving everything is not black and white. Asking the dsa about such matters would be a waste of time as the answer would be? The colour GREY springs to mind.
Hi Rog. These sort of people are not professionals they are wanna be’s. and can have dangerous preconceptions.
Sorry mate I teach driving for a living not a weekend hobby.
I work for IAM fleet at times. To do this you must be qualified and be DSA Fleet registered. This qualification is higher than an ADI ect. I spend 99% of time time involved with driver training and am not a great fan of the I am brigade.
You seem alright though

Thats what I mean. traffic cops are some of the worst trainers of the drivers I have contact with. Rigid systems and not much in the way of people skills.
We are not trying to teach normal drivers police pursuit skills. Some I have come accross let them break speed limits, cross over the centre line when they can see bugger all. They can’t cope . I have 2 or 3 hours with each. Get them thinking like high speed traffic cops and they may end up dead after the training rather than living longer.

I found completely the opposite to your experiences - interesting…
