if the wide angle mirror was adjusted properly you would see most of them

second time I’ve seen that video and I’ve just noticed how badly the wide angle mirror is adjusted.
Thing is though it does get linked to loads on cycle websites and so it mostly gets the message across (except to a few complete numpties).
What about this one?

Now thats called slip streaming lol

For me, this says it all. you only have to watch this footage to see why they get squashed.

Excuse me but why is the truck and trailer not straight as it should be when making a left turn.
In a case like that the truck driver would be as much to blame as the cyclists.
It the truck had already started the turn he would have clearly seen the cyclists when sitting at the junction(in a straight line) and should not have moved till the cyclists were out of the way.

All of the bikes are not in the blind spot in this clip.
What is this all about? Trying to excuse the driver from using his mirrors?

In this clip I think its trying to demonstrate how a vehicle’s blind spot works in order to save a life or two.
No excuse for not using mirrors but when turning left at a tight junction a large vehicle may have to move over to the right, ideally not enough space for a car to get into but more than enough for an ‘arsefull’ of bikes to invade.
In the first clip of this thread the wide angle mirror is showing far too much of the cab but it highlights the danger well.
N.B.
Arsefull= collective noun for large amount of cyclists in one tight space.
Example: “We expect roads in the surrey area to be blocked today as theres an arsefull of cyclists on a ramble”.
Quite right Dave.An artic may have to position further over to the right but this should be done early far before you reach the junction and the vehicle should be in a straight line when sitting at the junction thus limiting the blind spot areas.
Never mind wide angle mirrors not set properly…I have seen many a driver that does not have a clue how to set normal mirrors and many an instructor not knowing either!
Some cyclists are abysmal but so are some drivers.

Yep we have to accept this, other factors like just having a bad day, in a rush or a moments lapse of concentration can have disaterous consequences.
We are all human, we all make mistakes we just have to look out for each other. A moments stupidity by either a cyclist or motorist is great for a youtube moment as long as the person has survived the day to upload it.

How very true but it does not seem that way anymore. It seems everyone is out for themselves and always in such a hurry.
Bring back the days when we had some courteous road users.
Perhaps its a bit naive of me to consider we will all look out for each other, but we need this drumming home at every opportunity, cocooned in our metal shells leads to a disconnect and extension of our personal space which leads to road rage incidents and moments of sheer madness. Even cyclists suffer from road rage as their personal space is extended.
Responsibility by accountability may be an option and some form of identification of cyclists so the highway code is adhered to more often. Some fear of being caught when jumping traffic lights might instill a more responsible approach by the minority of cyclists that lets say take a risk or two.
I don’t expect cyclists to have to carry a license plate around with them but in this day and age a GPS locator that identifies the cyclist could work.
I realise this flies in the face of the freedom cyclists enjoy but some safety measure are needed even if its just for the cities to calm them down and level the playing field a bit.
Who knows trucks could then even be fitted with a device that warns the driver if a cyclist is nearby, from a little bleep when cyclists are about to an alarm if a cyclist is in the danger zone and in imminent danger.
Driver should be able to cancel this once the danger has been seen or its gonna drive us nuts and defeat the object.
Only for cities though don’t want this going off on the motorway when going under a bridge with a cyclist on it.
Perhaps its time to stop throwing money away on blue paint and invest it in some more safety devices.

Do not think it is naive of you at all but it is certainly lacking in today’s society.
Regarding highway code I agree it needs to be adhered to not just by cyclists but drivers as well.Part of the problem is some drivers do not even know the rules and are not interested.
As for devices fitted to vehicles to warn of a cyclist I do not agree.I think if cyclists and drivers took more care and rode and drove properly the majority of these accidents would not happen.
Attitudes need to change on both sides.
Bearing in mind that tail sweep can do as much damage as cut in and it’s equally possible that an issue can develop directly ahead all of which compromises the amount of concentration which can be directed to the nearside mirrors, maybe albion can inform everyone in his expert opinion, how a driver can keep observation on all those issues at the same time. Also remembering that there are no rules which prevent a cyclist getting into a dangerous position on the nearside while the driver’s attention is directed ahead and to the offside mirrors. In addition to the fact that no matter how many mirrors there are and how well they are set there are still going to be a number of very real blind spots.
