An extra penny at the pump!

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this incredible fuel pump phenomena when filling the car , you stop the pump at a round figure , say £20 or £30 but it nearly always clicks on to add an extra 1p , ok its not a lot but every pump across the country doing this soon mounts up , I questioned it in my local garage yesterday , the attendant agreed it does happen very often & his words were a penny everywhere soon mounts up …I’m sure you don’t get any more fuel for your penny, its a conspiracy …

I always stop at .99, you don’t get anymore fuel for a penny so why give it over

I think they hope that if you go over by a penny you will round it up to the nearest next fiver or tenner. Maybe the pumps are even designed to do this :grimacing: Tin foil hat time!

I always pay by card so just fill it up till it clicks off.

Its all about the maths of it. You maybe trying to get an exact “money” value in but the pump is working to the litres. So once you get over a certain point then it will jump sometimes by 2 pence, especially with the high prices that are going through at the moment.

An example for you

Pence Per Litre / Litres / Cost in Pounds
139.9 / 20.02 / £28.00798
139.9 / 20.03 / £28.02197

Hope this makes it clear

You must be constantly filling up your motor then,

There’s a minimum spend of 3 litres on our local pumps, used to be a pain for filling the scooter, it only took 4.5 litres from empty :open_mouth:

I’m like Ched, fill it till it clicks, pay on card, no loose change to worry about etc.

Probably designed by the same people as the digi-tacho.

Always amazes me that they are allowed to sell something at a value that isn’t legal tender for example 140.9 a litre. On the pumps it says minimum 2 litres but them that would be £2.818 (excuse maths if wrong!) therefore you cannot have a minimum of 2 litres. I don’t go and buy a tin of beans at 25.7p!! Back to original post tho yes I have fallen foul of the extra penny going on so much so I refuse to pay it out of a matter of principle. If the fuel is in the pipe after i have stopped pumping its already paid for and shouldn’t be rounding up!!! rant over lol

Anyone else remember the Not the Nine O’Clock News sketch where the attendant pressed a button to put it half a pence over the fiver on the pump?

This one I believe

I’m always going for the exact litre rather than the exact pound. I’m always using those money off tickets, along with paying by card, so the odd pennies don’t bother me. :stuck_out_tongue:

Well done that man!! I had a look and couldn’t find it

i noticed the other day, when i put the nozzle in the filler and pulled the trigger, the pump meter counter to 12p before the pump even started !!!

Madguy :smiling_imp:

I am no longer trucking for a living but I have noticed that our Sainsburys in Matlock have a diesel pump that flips from (say) £20.99p to £21.01 no matter how steady you pull the trigger. I know that it doesn’t really matter long term as the fuel will be used but I find it ■■■■ annoying and I wonder if I am being short changed on fuel!!

Pete.

Interesting as it does the same in our Sainsburys

A couple of the big supermarkets are making a big play of how they are cutting fuel by 3p a litre.
They don’t give out any ■■■■■ of publicity when they stick the price up ! :imp:

I know ime going off on a tangent but is there any truth, that if you hold the trigger at half speed there is less vapour going into the tank . . thus more petrol?

A tesco near me has some pumps on where you press the amount you want before you pick up the nozzle. It then cuts off at the amount you pressed.

I shouldn’t really say this but what the hell!!
After spending many years driving tankers I have heard (Cough) of many dodges to lose or gain liquids.
The simplest way of beating the fuel pump is to always fill up on the opposite side of the pump to your filler cap, withdraw flex to maximum then knock the pump off on the pump itself where the nozzle sits in holster, trigger on nozzle still open, raise flex to drain it into your tank (you will need to raise it 3 or 4 times to overcome air locks) you will be surprised how much value those flexs hold at todays prices.
The downside to this of course is that the next customer pays to refill the flex then leaves it full.
Also never use a pump which you haven’t observed the previous customer use just in case they know what you know
its just what i heard of course
