An absolute crying shame

Back in 1971 I hand painted this breakdown lorry, it looked a treat!
It’s been rotting away at it’s present location for the last 5 years as I know of, and I know that the present owner will never restore or sell it…should be a law against it!

Kill the owner & claim it as a Barn Find. Lol

Should be a law against it :imp: !
E-mail a apic to Ted Conolly at " classic & vintage commercials " mag, and get him to put in a piece about it, might drum up some interest and twist the arm of the owner to sell it ■■? :sunglasses:

I just don’t get these people  , how can you get pleasure in the ownership of somethng by seeing it rot-away? There is a bloke not far from me, his yard (farm) out-buildings/barns etc are a Aladins Cave of old gear just crying out to be restored/preserved, but he wouldn’t sell you as much as a wheel-nut :unamused: .I have enquired through a old friend/business associate of his about 2 ERFs he has, 1 is still in working order & being used as a shunter by my mate, he can have it as long as he wants cos this bloke doesn’t want it, but will he sell it? not a chance, it’ll end up back at his yard eventually parked by a barn & rusting into the ground, with the fibre-glass cab sat there as a memory of a wagon that could have been done up & doing the rallies etc for real enthusiasts to see & enjoy!

Hey, The same over here, they prefer to let it rot away as selling it for reasonable price :imp: :imp: .

Cheers Eric,

Hiya …that reminds me of a PLACE near Hitchin now whats it called…50 acre’s of rotting trucks at sky high prices.
then if you make a deal, he charges the earth to hire his crane to lift a wreck on to your trailer.
thats the wreck he has maybe made 2-3k profit on over the years.
John

I’ve said it before, it distresses me to see motors being left to rot like that, whoever owns it should be ashamed, if he doesn’t want it or can’t afford to do something he should offer it for sale. :imp:

Rush Green Motors…

Been trying to do a deal for years - every time we talk, the price goes up or he decides he doesn’t want to sell, even when I turned up with a low loader and cash in hand!

Two sides to this really. I have a friend who has around 20 tractors plus a Mercedes Benz Diplomats car from the early 1950’s. The car has remained sheeted up on a trailer for at least 20 years but he has no intention of ever selling it as there are (allegedly) only three in existence, he also will never do anything with it! Regarding the tractors I asked him why he kept them as they are wrecks, his answer was that they “were his and if I sold one for, say £500, that money would soon be gone on fuel or into the household whereas at the moment I can look out of my window and see a tractor”. I kind of know what he means as I have 2 garages full of old barn engines and machinery which I will never get around to restoring, I could easily sell them but THEY ARE MINE!!!

Pete.

It is a shame that this Mickey Mouse Foden is going to waste, It would look good if it was restored, Perhaps something like this Eh, Regards Larry.

hey, I agree with you,if you sell it (mostly for a low price if you are not a moneydog) the money is fast gone up in something else (but maybe something more usefull). And if you keep it you can look at it as you want (but looking at something rotten away on the yard is not the best) if you want to keep it you must take care of it. Otherwise sell it for an acceptable price and let have the buyer fun with it.

Bye Eric,

I’ve been into old motors for about 50 years now. owned a few and tried to buy a few more interesting ones. I wouldn’t mind a quid for every time I’ve heard;
“That was dad’s, it’s not for sale, I’m going to do it up one day”
or; “No, I’m hanging on to it, they’re going to be worth a lot of money one day”
only to see the yard cleared by the scrappie a short while after.

Further to Rush Green. There was another well-known yard not too far from me, absolutely chocka with old stuff, including unused ex-military Bedford OYs and similar lined and stacked up. About 25 years ago I was looking for an Albion engine. 'Phoned the yard, when I eventually got through, he said he’d got what I wanted, I had to make an appointment to meet the bloke there at a certain time on a Sunday morning. He arrived, unlocked the yard, locked up behind us and took me to look at the engine. It was the wrong one, had obviously been dragged round and round the yard for years, all the projections on the block casting were broken off, unusable. He suggested I could use my engine to make one out of two. I pointed out that the engine was so different the bits wouldn’t fit. Out of interest I asked how much? £200! (remember 25 years ago, and it was just fit for scrap). Then he said, “hold on, I know the one you want, got a good one here somewhere”. “Let’s have a look” I said. “No, not now” says he “I’ll be late home for my dinner, I’ll sort it out and give you a ring, tell you what though, there’s a radiator for yours over here look.” He took me to a pile of scrap metal. on the top sure enough was a rad for my motor, well almost. It was a top tank (cracked,) with one side frame attached and the remains of a honeycomb. " Make one out of two" he says. “No thanks”. “Alright then” says he, “I’ll sort that engine out for you in the week and give you a ring”. Despite several reminders from me 'til I gave up, I’ve never had that call!
Bernard

Hiya if you have’nt been to rush green for a while(12 months). all one side of the yard has been clared out
and is now full of 1 to 2 year old cars. at first i thought it was airport storage but the cars are packed in to tight.
getting back on line. all the lorries he wanted thousends of pounds for have all been scrapped now.
an absoulte crying shame…X 800 …i would think.
John

Would love a snoop around but I feel he probably wouldn’t let me.

Wow…

I’ve heard of Rush Green Motors, seen plenty of photos and read about their reluctance to part with anything for less than a kings ransom but I never realised how big a place it actually was.

Cheers
