American truck mot!

Hi everyone, can someone explain to me the grey area that is owning a yankee truck here in the uk, removing the fifth wheel not using it for hire or reward just for shows, does it require a valid mot !?i have spoken to several people on this subject and have had various answers, mostly they do not ! some early types 1970s never had a manufacturers plate so they couldnt be motd ? glad to hear any views on this subject thanks jake…

oh dear, here we go again :unamused:

don’t know the answer to your actual question, but there is no need to remove the fifth wheel

dont do anything to it tax it as a display vehicle and it is excempt from mot taxed plg all the classic commercial guys do it

TRAILERS1:
it as a display vehicle and it is excempt from mot

Is this a definitive exemption?

my classic truck goes that and has done for a couple of yeards and will tax it again soon as that as well as long as you go somewhere to DISPLAY it ie rally thats why most road run have adisplay either before or end of rally

Can you get away with Showmans vehicle as they are exempt MOT but must have a certificate of roadworthiness or at least be able to pass MOT at any given time.

If you want an MOT you will probably have to go through the Single Vehicle Approval Route. The problem is many vehicles from America will not meet European specifications on things like light lenses, mirrors and possibly marker lights. It will be an interesting answer when it finally comes out.

I read a bit about a Living Van being exempt from almost everything, that must be how the Glastonbury Hippies do it :stuck_out_tongue:

Peace Man

It will already have an SVA test - It would have needed this before it even gets let loose in the country.

Tax it as a classic vehicle if you can.

Isn’t the law about to change re MOT exemption for post 1960 vehicles?
.Gov thought there far too many with exemptions.
Was there a parliamentary debate on the issue?

the early american trucks didn’t have front brakes, they were an optional extra.
so you might have a bit of confusion with vosa.

THAT AINT TRUE !
In northern states it was a option not to have them as it helped for better brakeing in bad weather

IIRC Fronts were additional fitment and had to be specced at time of order. They became mandatory in the late 80’s. Back before ABS it was felt that not braking them meant they wouldn’t lock in heavy rain or ice and snow allowing better directional control.
It also saved weight and the costs of maintaining an extra set of brakes

I’ve got no idea what the Vostapo or MOT score would be for not having them on a motor over here though. Many of the larger fleets (numpty drivers) and more operators in the south chose to fit them and you may wish to bare this in mind when sourcing a vehicle

well either way, it’s something to look for. he could still end up with one with no front brakes.

I’m sure some are registerd as a mobile home and this gets round some C&U regs
