i just can’t understand why anyone would even consider crossing a picket line. those that stick together should be applauded. and anyone that crosses a picket line are sticking two fingers up to all those in the past that fought to abolish child labour, get equal rights for women, abolish apartheid, and all manner of people that stuck together to make the lives of others much better. they weren’t thinking about number 1, they were thinking of others.
I thought they were striking because they wanted more pay?
Or are they giving that extra pay to charity?
dogface:
i would not worry to much shell drivers have just about agreed to a pay rise for the next five years and the wincanton boys have called off their lastest strike
I wonder if that’s owt to do with PetroPlus going bang, and the sudden availability of hundreds of experienced tanker drivers
d4c24a:
would not think twice ,they want to strike let them ,you want to work get on with it
I’ve no problem doing the job of someone on strike, I need work, they don’t want to work, no probs to me.
HOWEVER, I dislike doing the job of someone else for less money, the job should pay the going rate.
If your question is just whether I’d go through a picket line or not, the answer is yes, as long as it doesn’t put myself or anyone else in danger - I won’t barge through if they’re blocking the gate, but I won’t put myself in harms way either, if I felt threatened, I’d not be doing it or I’d not be stopping if I was already there in the truck.
+1
Boss: “You’ll cross a picket line today or you’ll not have your contract renewed.”
Me: “I’ll cross the picket line if you put their pay for their job on my contract.”
Boss: {shouts across the room} “DAVE! - You’ll cross a picket line today or you’ll not have your contract renewed…”
Works every time. In 22 years of driving, the easiest way to get out of crossing a picket line is to ask for the same pay as what the strikers would have got had they worked. I’ve never crossed a picket line yet as a result!
There was a time when agencies got paid more than full timers. Those days are gone, so I would not expect any agency to be crossing any picket line if they followed the same simple system I’ve always used.
On the other hand, if you do their £12ph job for £8.00ph then indeed everyone WILL hate you including your wife and even yourself in the end, as they’ll expect you to sell your soul and every lesser thing you have, since you pushed back so little when put to…

My agency gaffer says it might be kicking off in the fules busines soon and hes asking if il’l go to Immigham or Ellsmere Port or Birmingham (is it Kingbury I think) and do the petrol deliverys and cross picket lines.
I relly need to work but dont want to get in any bother. What should I tell my gaffer?
Who pays your mortgage or rent? who puts the food on the table? will they help you when the chips are down? NO Its a cut throat world out there, and "the meek shall not inherit the earth, they just get trodden on. Never used to be like this but Ive had my toes trodden on too many times
Doesn’t make it right though does it?? …hence why this country is full of complete ■■■■■ and why no-one will invest in this hell hole full of ignorant, lazy, retards who are just out for themselves!!!..when society can’t pull together for the greater good and have some decency and respect for their fellow humans then you might as well give up…it’s just a shame that not too many people can think logically about their actions with intelligence, instead of just uttering ■■■■ it or ■■■■ em,me,me,me…yeah it is a cut throat world out there all because of attitudes like this…be an individual and think for yourself, dont go following all the other sheep in the herd

you really don’t want to be a scab. your wife will leave you. they don’t like living with scabs.
shops won’t serve you, paving slabs will be thrown at you from motorway bridges.
but on the other hand. i’ve heard a rumour that there is going to be a new tv programme called
“worlds scariest, toughest, and scabiest truckers”.
My wife likes me earning money you know the usual bills and kids. Im quite new to all of this so thought i couild ask the question from blokes that know from experince.

Some of you lot are unreal, you moan about the likes of Stobart and foreign trucks cutting the job to bits, lowering wages and screwing up the UK haulage industry, but you are quite prepared to cross a picket line and shaft other drivers who are sticking together to try and maintain their decent wage and conditions.
When you are all working 70 plus hours a week for minimum wage in future you deserve all you get.

they are too stupid to realise this.
Its a bit like asking all the supermarket checkout operator staff and poorly paid waitresses to stick together to improve their lot, what a joke! it will never happen its unnatainable and unrealistic. Some things because or their nature and structure are out of reach with regards containment and control its like planning a war, to many contingent situations and independant factors controlling direction. If ever there was an industry that was regulated by market forces and competition then haulage is it. If someone takes something from one end it will leave a space at the other end. The status quo is governed by a balance of greed and neccesity, it will never change, hence the saying dont pay the ferryman till he gets you to the other side

Thanks. Ive looked at some websites and it sounds like the fules driver’s are having it really bad. Ill tell my gaffer that i dont want to sign up for any training and go and do there jobs.
I’m sure they’ll have a whip round from their very comfortable salaries and send you some money to pay the bills this week.
Seriously get real, its a tough old world out there and everyman has to look after himself and his family, the unions are pretty much a spent force, so you have nothing to fear crossing a picket line.
in theory if i was asked to cross picket line my answer would prob be no…
but a place i worked at some years ago i was classed as temp pool staff, covering holidays sickness ect… doing the same job as the full time staff to the same standard but paid alot less, i and others did this for years but although the full time staff knew the wage nothing was ever done, but when there payrise was refused and talk of strikes were mentioned we were all expected to take the same action, tbh i refused and said i would work, and words scab was mentioned, luckily it never came to a strike and the temp thing was scrapped… so i guess my real answer would be wether I agreed with the reasons for the strike…
