Am I living in the real world

dekka:
22 hours @15/hr = £330 plus ONE night out £30 ? adds up to £360

straight up I was earning more than that 15 years ago

If you were earning that in 2005 that would be the equivalent of nearly £700 allowing for inflation today!
There’s been some wild claims regarding wages that some driver’s have claimed to have earned doing the rounds on social media, a couple I’ve seen on a large FB group claiming to have been raking in a grand a week in the 70&80’s, again equivalent to over £4kpw today! :open_mouth:

Yeah I was also thinking the op was a fantasist talking gash

Tolemans drivers were on over a grand a week in the later 80’s, especially those on the then new Lohr mk5 12 car carriers.

My weekend and OT rate (same) was £12.02p per hour in the late 80’s, wasn’t on the cars then.

My short stint on agency at the end of the noughties was an eye opener, £9 or £10 an hour straight through.

Nearly there again:
Yeah I was also thinking the op was a fantasist talking gash

I’m afraid I can’t put a payslip up from 2005/6 as I really don’t think I will find them. But the claim is genuine - job was on tanks - food processing by-products to pig farms. At that time in my life I was probably only doing every other weekend. As a full time dad that was my only paid job at the time so I was able to claim full personal tax allowance. I used to try and do max hours for the 2 days whenever I went out and that would occasionally put just over 400 in the bank.

I’ve been out today (Sun) and earned over £230, that’s 12 and a half hours @ 18.50 paid straight thro without deduction of breaks PAYE NOT agency. If people stop taking crap rates they won’t be offered them.

I really don’t want to start a willy waving payslip competition, I’m just saying stop taking ■■■■.

Well without trying to dismiss any of these claims because that’s exactly what they are, claims without verifiable proof, not that I or anyone else would keep payslips from 30 odd year ago anyway, so I’ll not argue the toss. If the BOE inflation calculator isn’t lying then those wages if correct would command some serious buying power back then.
As a comparison a quick search reveals an NHS Consultant starting salary today is £85K, so inflation being non discriminatory surely they are also as you put it “taking crap rates” assuming you were referring to all working people?

No they wouldn’t, read what I put carefully - at best 400 take home for 26 of the 52 weekends in a year - it’s only just over 10K, it was only 15 years ago not 1960. Good money for the work and it gave me a great lifestyle with my young kids but not serious buying power, not at all.

IDK what NHS consultants have got to do with this, nor do I know what their starting salary was 15 years ago.

Do you think that the average UK worker has seen a rise in living standards over the last 15 years then, an overall improvement in employment t&c’s, a reduction in the cost of living (in real terms)?

I don’t think all working people are taking crap rates tho - some are more switched on than others.

F**k him and his 15 pound per hour.

Can do an early 1990’s pay slip. That’s class 1 night trunking union agreed rate around 45-50 hours per week.
£277 pw, £205 take home,£10,384 earned from April to December.
Even the job and finish became worthless after speed limiters and hub system work.
Everything turned to zb after the late 1970’s then the 90’s gradually just got worse for most.

yes you are…carryfast has proved it …he is right about the tachograph (er safety reasons) more like getting every minute out of the job,

I could tell you who and where but, I’d have to kill you.

But for what hours and shifts?

Ken.

Sorry Ken…
