Am I in the wrong job?

I’ve been doing this for a little over 3 years now, and can’t help wondering why my days seem so different from most of the others on here. It seems that most people can’t go one day without a dramatic episode involving another hgv, car, cycle etc. I’m far from perfect, and make mistakes, but move on and get on. I get the idiots who dive in and out at sliproads, but I expect the to do so at every junction so am already thinking about what to do. I’m not keen on going into London, but when I do I’m aware of the limitations of my vehicle and other road users, and plan accordingly. It just seems that a lot of people in this country live in a very black and white world, rather than infinite shades of grey.

Oh, I also like to have a chat with foreign drivers when I’m parked up with one

It seems a very British thing that people have to find another group of people to be in conflict with, for whatever reason: HGV vs cyclist, workers vs benefit claimants, nimbys vs everybody else. I suppose it’s the last 30-40 years that have encouraged greed and self-interest above a cohesive society.

Sorry if I’ve offended anybody, but I was bored and my mind was wandering

Well said. Unfortunately it may have gone too far to change! Self over all else I’m afraid.

Communist lol

It’s funny, I always used to be right of centre, but as I’ve got older I’ve become a lot more left wing - I even voted labour for the local council!

Its just modern life now. Some people cant help but post every little minor incident that 99% of us would call “bog standard day to day stuff” and make it into some big incident as if they are somehow unique in dealing with them

I would say you are bang on except for the wrong job bit. It is not the job it is the country and the management of it. We are the most populated country in Europe having slightly more people then say France yet France is 10 times larger than Britain. WE are sardines crammed into a little tin and it is getting worse.

Well, I keep telling my wife I’m definitely in the wrong country, but she keeps telling me that shell never emigrate unless we take her mother with us. Seems to defeat the object rather! (Actually, I love my mother in law, get on better with her than the missus a lot of the time).

Ah yes see what you mean, if you go to a hot country like Greece or Spain etc. the heat is a killer for elderly people so wise to stay

I think Malta is the most densley populated country in Europe.

She’d love you - she’s only 65, and looks 20 years younger! The often asked if she’s my wife’s sister - which she loves, but the missus isn’t quite so keen on

I don’t worry about what others are up to on the roads nowadays, as there are good and bad drivers and all the fretting and critique in world will never change that. I just chill out and take in the scenery.

Pay, conditions etc is immaterial, as extra money for some drivers would just equate to more ■■■■, more booze, more bacon sarnies, followed by more moaning about them not having enough money.

The old ‘knights of the road’ probably disappeared in the 1960’s so don’t expect respect from the general populous and you won’t be disappointed.

Think that’s covered everything, except for agencies, but too nice a day for that discussion.

Keep on truckin…

.

scaniason: you are in the right job

I’ve certainly got a good job at the moment, excellent boss/planner, never pushes you, will not have any running over hours (unless out of our control), decent truck to drive, fairly varied. Only complaint I have is that it’s all UK, and particularly at this time of year, I get the urge to bimble overseas for a bit.

A lot of the posters you’re referring to, are the resident bull ■■■■■■■■ you hear littering the rdc waiting rooms up and down the country. If you’d have seen them last night, you’d have recognised them due to the pink chalk and 7 coned off bays at tesco. They were also visible changing wheels just outside zeebee the night the herald went down

^^^ like!

I like my job, its very much like scaniason’s with the planning etc. The only downside are the overnight road closures but I now just look at them as additional overtime generators.

I love my job. I recently changed my driving style in an attempt to save fuel and improve my telematic scores. I now run about 3 clicks off the limiter and plod through the M1 roadworks in lane one at 45mph. It adds about twenty minutes or so (hourly pay) to my trip but by god have I de-stressed! Other drivers accuse me of hanging the bag out, bosses praise me for driving so well!
Not to mention in the past few weeks I’ve stopped to watch the sun go down over the moors, seen meteor showers and lunar eclipse, one of the most spectacular thunderstorms I have ever seen and of course the hen party minibus! That one is in my own personal bank, forever!
