Its has been just over a year since I passsed my C+E and Dcpc and I still havent been able to break into any type of driving job. Ive worked as a chef for 10 years since leaving Education (I
m currently 27) and have had no luck getting any type of driving employment or experience. I`ve canvassed every employer within a hundred miles or so and even went door to door. I have always had a clean license and and an excellent attitude towards any type of employment I have been in. Im now looking at Adr course to try broaden my Job search and was wondering if anyone will think this will increase my chances as It seems in my area its more of a case of “who you know” rather than anything else…Rant over
You could sign on with an agency. This will get you some experience, even if it’s driving vans or 7.5 tonners. You miight stand more of a chance with 12 months agency driving behind you. I guess you have got your digi tacho card??
Good Luck.
Have you tried the agencies ?

as landylad said is sign on to the agencies say you would be happy to do anything driving
I passed my class 2 in july & so far I have had work every week I said I be happy to do 7.5T work but saying that its all been class 2 work but saying that I only do 1/2 days a week agency work due to my part time job
also i’d advise only going to the agencies that are driving agencies only the likes of “driver hire” I have found these seem to be willing to take you on & find you work
good luck in finding work keep at it
I`ve applied to several agencies and had little or no response. I have also have my digi card, Just wondered if anyone else had been in the same situation and could give advice? Perhaps my age?
If you are registered with an agency, they will forget about you after a couple of days because they are so busy chasing work and placing the same guys / girls that they placed yesterday and the day before.
What you have to do is to phone them every two or three days asking if there is any work. You will drop lucky once and then after that they will start to remember you and call you every now and then. But YOU have to phone THEM a lot for them to even remember that you exist in the first place.
Thats what I had to do.
Yes, make sure the Agency mostly deals in drivers or at least warehouse / stacker truck jobs.
Good Luck
There’s sod all jobs in Scotland just now for reg drivers, let alone new starts.
Best advice I could give would be, forget the driving and stick to the proper job anyway.
If you’re desparate to drive every now and then aye sign up and an agency might use you when they get desperate… but be warned, it will be:
pish start times,
pish conditions,
pish treatment,
and utter pish wages.
I wish I was like you & had another skill besides driving and being stuck in this rat race for a joke wage.
You’re lucky.
Try Manpower they do Royal Mail work you might get some 4 a.m. starts with them in the run up to Christmas.I am nearly 60 and have never known a worse time to look for work.
Its not that bad at all i am on agency all the hours i want good wage fuel allowance and plenty of work in all 1 and 2 hiab and adr lol
Look on the VOSA website for local firms near you, knock on the doors, print some cards up with your contact details to give to the managers at the firms.
I honestly think that luck plays a large part in getting started. I passed class 1 on the Wednesday, started ringing around the agencies on the Friday only to be told that I had pretty much no chance unless I has 2 years experience. The 5th agency I tried had 5 guys go permanent with a big client and bit my hand off as it were. I did two weeks at the same place (Spar in Preston) and after the 6th shift, they offered me a permanent job driving both class 1 and 2 doing multidrop to their shops.
If you do get a few shifts with an agency, try to impress the hell out of their client and get in that way.
You’ve just got to keep on at it, get in people’s faces until they are so fed up with you that they give you a job just to shut you up. Somebody you asked seven or eight months ago will have forgotten all about you now so just do the rounds again and again and again until somebody caves in.
