Alternative cab cooking

If cooking in cab it’s usually by gas stove, unfortunately we’re not permitted to carry them. If I were to go for a microwave/travel kettle how would this fair against the batteries & would they be worth getting? Both batteries were replaced only 2 months previously.

I use a gas stove but I seen a 12v kettle in services yesterday and bought it because I reckoned it would be handy for making tea instead of taking the stove out every time. I tried it out earlier and after 15mins the water was only luke warm so I got fed up waiting and went back to my stove. either mine is a ■■■■ one or they are not worth a toss.

I got a 3000w Pure Sine Wave Inverter fitted and got a kettle and microwave from Argos in Totton.

Both work perfectly. When using the microwave I just leave the engine ticking over but could probably get away with not doing that as most things heat up enough within 10 minutes. The kettle works well and boils up quick. I don’t run the engine for this.

I’ve got a Merc with a factory fitted 24v microwave (500watt) and use it most nights for up to 10 mins without the engine running and have always had plenty of battery power in the morning even in the winter with the night heater on.

If you cant carry a gas hob for what ever reason, have you considered getting an induction hob if you wanna cook from the raw ingredients … these either come in single or double…

Micro wave food can be some what bland…but then on the flip side there are plenty of supermarkets that produce ready made meals and all for a reasonable price…

I take stews, Currys or pasta in Tupperware containers & when I’m parked up for the night (usually 1 or 2 a week) I put it on the passenger floor, (MAN TGX, night heater vents are under the seats) cover it with a coat & make a ‘cooker’ then put the night heater on high for 20-30 minutes while I do my checks & paperwork, ‘Voila’ piping hot food just right after a long day.
I also put a bottle of water in my ‘Cooker’ with the food & that gets too hot sometimes (about 20 minutes is enough) for a half decent flannel wash &/or coffee (just finish warming it up on the stove) 1 small can of Gas usually lasts me about 3 to 4 weeks.

I’ve got Beef Casserole for tomorrow night. Yummy ! With a couple of bottles of Chilled (on the Aircon) Cider to wash it down. :stuck_out_tongue:
Shhhh ! don’t tell Lady ‘V’ about the Cider. :unamused:

Ha ha, just had it, washed down with 2 bottles of Hobgoblin (I forgot my Cider at 04.00 this morning)
Whilst chatting with my Dad for the last hour.

I used to heat pasties up on the dashboard vents in winter, with the heating on full and my baseball cap, covering the pasty to keep the heat in, 30mins+ and the pasties would be piping hot

Do you get funny looks when you’re parked up in the middle of summer, sun cracking the ■■■■-stained flags and you’ve got all your windows and the roof open with the night heater roaring away full chat? I do!

I would if I parked in MSA’s or busy places, but I look for quiet places if possible & I block the other vent off so it’s not a sauna.

Dashboard Pasty’s are great Peirre, it’s all about forward planning.

Good man! Personally, I consider it sport… :stuck_out_tongue:

To add to the above, I find drinks, milk, butter etc keep nice and cool on the top passenger step. Maybe not in the height of summer but the wind at 90ks seems to work for me

Just a question about storing large drums of water how many days is the water safe before it should not be used

Well, it’s already over a Million years old, so a few days should be ok !

On a serious side, I don’t leave it in the sun in a plastic container & only use 1 or 2 litre bottles so they are constantly being washed & refilled.

Yah ur ok at that a week s water would be too long I guess

I use a 25 ltr container and only clean it when the green growth inside gets too unsightly, aint killed me yet :unamused:

All advice taken on board, I’ll certainly try out the night heater trick and see how it goes, I’ve also been pointed towards this recently that may be of use to a few people, I’ve heard good things heinz.co.uk/en/Products/Heinz-BIG

Also going to check out the induction hobs and find out what effect on the batteries they have. Thanks all
