how much lighter would 8 alloy wheels on a tractor unit be compared to 8 steel wheels
about 200-250kgs, entire rig is said too be 500kgs
would that be any make or type of alloy new or old and how much would you be looking at for a set for a tractor unit new or used
Old boss bought a 2nd hand set of alcolas for £1000 n they took 220kgs off the tare weight of a twin steer lift cf daf. I would expect a new set to be at the least £2500
If you where to change front axle and drive axle would it be worth doing weight wise
Alcoa state that a full 6x2 tractor with tri axle trailer will save 300KGs compared to steel wheels, but the lik shows it as saving 230 KGs
ive been ringing round to find a 2nd hand set need a set for a foden alpha been asked if I need retro fit what does that mean and whats the cheapest way of doing it been told a may have to change the wheel studs .
Retro-fit means fitting them to something that isn’t already fitted with alloys - the fixing studs are usually different (could be wrong here, but I think alloys use longer studs and/or different nuts - often the case with car alloys at least)
If you have retro fit Alcoa’s, these fit to the existing studs, but you need to purchase the retrofit wheel nuts. The retrofit wheels have larger fixing holes to accommodate the retrofit nuts.
It is great fun trying to get those nuts through a dual wheel I have been close to tears. I do have alloys fitted to my current 8x4 but I don’t think it stacks up financially. Be carefull buying second hand wheels they start to crack (I think 10 years life) alcoas are date stamped.

hi, yeah those long nuts can be a pain to fit on dual wheels although we just retro fitted a new scania unit, 8 wheels ,60 nuts and when i rang to ask why there was no long nuts for the drive axle i was told they are discontinued as they were to blame for cracking dishes. ■■? So the nut doesnt touch the inner wheel now.
